Pausing a moment before I start my September. This month is a milestone. One more year….

It's been four years since my last breast cancer radiation therapy. Not everyone shares this life-changing experience openly; I wouldn't have either, except I know how valuable it is to speak with someone who has gone through cancer treatment. It's a relief to connect with someone who understands the thoughts and emotions of cancer treatment, and is now living the new normal.

The challenge doesn't just stop when you are labeled “cancer free.” There is a lifetime of emotional, mental, and physical recovery. If you are fortunate to have the type of cancer that responds to preventative medication, the side effects can be debilitating.

I post this not for attention to myself but for those you know who quietly get up every day after experiencing an event that can be downplayed. It's life-changing even if you just had a scare hearing the word cancer associated with your name.

I am here to connect from one cancer thriver to another, living my new normal, setting reasonable expectations for myself and offering a listening ear.
