“Mother Nature, why is it snowing in mid-April?”
April 16, 2021, iPhone. If you needed an example of climate change, here you are. The fluctuations in warm and cold temperatures harm plants, and especially animals who are coming out of hibernation or migrating back up north, because at this time of year they no longer have their winter adaptations. So what do we do? As individuals, some simple solutions are to drive less if you are able; you could ride share, walk, bike, or take public transit if any of these are available/feasible to you. This way there is less gas being burned and less CO2 being released into the atmosphere. We can use less single use plastics, as they are produced from crude oil. We can buy things from thrift stores to reduce how many things need to be manufactured brand new and how many things get sent to developing countries that overwhelm their economies (it’s amazing the treasures you find in thrift stores). We can compost and grow foods, to replenish soil and prevent food scraps from creating methane in landfills, and so much more. Ultimately, a lot of this change has to come from policy level actions, so that the individual actions are more accessible and feasible systemically, but please also remember that any small actions that you take, do make a difference.
