There's something about photographing a dog who doesn't know yet that their whole life is about to change.

If you know me at all, you know I regularly photograph dogs who need homes. It's one of my favorite parts of this work, giving these dogs a real shot at being seen by the right family. It matters more than people realize.

I just wrapped a session with a group of the sweetest dogs, and I can already tell you every one of them is going to make somebody's whole world better.

Some dogs I've photographed once and others I photograph on repeat! Maddie, I've been photographing since I first moved to Columbus, well over twelve years now.

Fun to see this country girl spend a little time in a city spot! New backdrop, same sweet dog. Still just as adorable, still just as fun to work with as day one.

I finally made some time to get some new photos of my little crew! I can't believe we're going on 4 years with Emmett and Louie already.

It's sad to me that no one wanted ANY of these dogs. Well, we did. and we love them literally with our entire souls.

Emmett - the velcro dog (12 years old)
Louie - the off the charts wild child (10 years old)
Blossom - my sweet bossy diva girl (16 years old)
Jax - the other wild child (15 years old)

Ernie sat like he had three different moods and wanted you to know all of them.

One frame soulful and searching, the next pure genuine curiosity, like he was working something out. Then out of nowhere, this wild, crazy grin like he forgot he was supposed to be serious.

Same dog, same five minutes, completely different personalities.

This is exactly why I never rush a session, dogs don't just have one face and they shouldn't get just one portrait.

Columbus dog parents, if your pup has this many sides to him, I want to see them all!

Ernie apparently is a big fan of ducks lol! He did it in almost every frame this session, ears up, head cocked, like he was waiting for applause.

Here's something I want every dog parent to know before they book:

Your dog does not need to be a natural in front of the camera.
He doesn't need to sit pretty and stare at the camera, hold a stay, or have any idea what "look here" means.

That's literally my job.

What I do from the moment we start is give him room to just be a dog. Sniff the field. Chase the toy. Look back over his shoulder at you like he does every single day. Somewhere in the middle of all that, something clicks.

When they just exist...That's when the good stuff happens.

The photos end up looking like him. Not a stiff, sit-pretty version. The real one who greets you at the door.

That's not a happy accident. That's the whole point.

This is exactly why dog portrait sessions in Columbus, Ohio work best when the dog leads, not the photographer.

One of my most memorable "yuk" moments from a session? I had just finished the most gorgeous session with this girl but suddenly something just on the other side of the river we were shooting in caught her attention.

This was one of the few dogs that could be off leash and she was a trained therapy dog, but interest was peaked when she found herself a dead deer and decided to rolled around in it like it was a spa day.

I have smelled a lot of things in sixteen years of shooting dogs outdoors. That was a new one. No amount of professional composure prepared me for it. I died thinking about her mom driving home with her. lol

But honestly, dogs that get a little unhinged make the best kind of images. We did get great images after the "incident" but her mom and I laughed like crazy as neither of us could stomach the smell. That was a wrap.
