Ernie sat like he had three different moods and wanted you to know all of them.

One frame soulful and searching, the next pure genuine curiosity, like he was working something out. Then out of nowhere, this wild, crazy grin like he forgot he was supposed to be serious.

Same dog, same five minutes, completely different personalities.

This is exactly why I never rush a session, dogs don't just have one face and they shouldn't get just one portrait.

Columbus dog parents, if your pup has this many sides to him, I want to see them all!

Here's something I want every dog parent to know before they book:

Your dog does not need to be a natural in front of the camera.
He doesn't need to sit pretty and stare at the camera, hold a stay, or have any idea what "look here" means.

That's literally my job.

What I do from the moment we start is give him room to just be a dog. Sniff the field. Chase the toy. Look back over his shoulder at you like he does every single day. Somewhere in the middle of all that, something clicks.

When they just exist...That's when the good stuff happens.

The photos end up looking like him. Not a stiff, sit-pretty version. The real one who greets you at the door.

That's not a happy accident. That's the whole point.

This is exactly why dog portrait sessions in Columbus, Ohio work best when the dog leads, not the photographer.

One of my most memorable "yuk" moments from a session? I had just finished the most gorgeous session with this guy but suddenly something just on the other side of the river we were shooting in caught his attention.

This was one of the few dogs that could be off leash and he was a trained therapy dog, but interest was peaked when he found himself a dead deer and decided to rolled around in it like it was a spa day.

I have smelled a lot of things in sixteen years of shooting dogs outdoors. That was a new one. No amount of professional composure prepared me for it. I died thinking about his mom driving home with him. lol

But honestly, dogs that get a little unhinged (not to this extreme) lol but they are the best kind of images. We did get great images after the "incident" but his mom and I laughed like crazy as neither of us could stomach the smell. That was a wrap.

Some dogs have a good smile. This guy has an entire personality built around his.

The kind of grin that shows up right before he talks you into one more adventure, one more trail, one more "we're not done yet."

This is Aquarius. He skips hello and gets right down to the handshake!

I photographed this really good boy this weekend for Speak for the Unspoken and he spent most of his time offering up his paw like it was the most natural greeting in the world. The rest of the time was simply the cutest head tilts imaginable.

He's so mild mannered, easy, and completely unbothered by the camera. He's just here, waiting on someone to notice him. He REALLY deserves THAT person!

Neither one got the life they deserved. Just two little ones that should have had a lifetime of car rides and belly rubs.

"Where's the best place to shoot?"

People ask me this all the time. The real answer is wherever your dog already feels like himself!

For this crew, that was the shoreline and trails at Antrim Park.

Two lab mixes who treat water like the whole point of being alive. One senior who takes his time these days. All three were water dogs, so the lake set the pace, not us.

The best images never come from the perfect location. They come from the place your dog already loves being.
