Olive-sided flycatchers winter in northern South America and summer/nest in the boreal forests of Canada, especially at the higher elevations of mountains near the tree lines. But in spring and summer they can be found during migration in places like Swiss Valley Preserve in Dubuque County. In the spring, I heard one at Bankston County Park. This is my first photo of the bird. Thay can be found perching upright in tall trees on bare branches. They look like they are wearing vests.

Broad-winged hawk, Sunfish Lake, Washington County, Minnesota. Watch for large "kettles" of these hawks to migrate through eastern Iowa in mid-September.. They will roost overnight in large wooded areas and rise up in the morning thermals when the sun heats the air.

Didn't find what I looked for in Minnesota. The state may have more needles but there are more and bigger haystacks, too...

Didn't find what I looked for in Minnesota. The state may have more needles but there are more and bigger haystacks, too! I did notice this osprey hanging out on a dead tree on my way back home -- at Reno Bottoms in the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wilflife Refuge near New Albin.
