Our first cruise ship of the year, P/V Victory II, arrived this morning for a day stop. After a cloudy transit through the canal, the sun broke through the cloud cover and it made for a nice "storm light" setting at the cruise dock (convention center). Our resident tour boat Vista Star is in the distance. A number of passengers are doing a "rail and sail" combo by riding a charter on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Last year this same vessel arrived on June 5. Duluth, MN - June 4, 2026

A well-timed sunrise arrival for the M/V BBC Genoa this morning, its first visit to the Twin Ports. The forward pilot house, or "cab forward" as my railroad friends say, is somewhat unique on ocean vessels but common on our classic Great Lakes bulk carriers. The Genoa is here delivering machinery to the port terminal. Duluth, MN - June 3, 2026

A short video of the structure fire this morning at the Superior Lidgerwood Mundy plant. The facility is relocating to a new building near the B**g Bridge due to work on a new approach to the Blatnik Bridge. I'm not sure if they have moved in yet or not. Last Memorial Day weekend Gus and I made a trip over to the Upper Peninsula for some rail and sail activity. We knew the LS&I would be busy with the M/V American Spirit scheduled to load. An added bonus was the arrival of the M/V Lee A. Tregurtha, both loading for Toledo and two of our favorite vessels. This is the first visit to Marquette for the Spirit in nearly two and a half years. Without a conveyor boom system, Marquette typically loads narrow-beam vessels off traditional gravity chutes. The Spirit is one of only a handful of 1000-footers that can load from this dock, but it involves loading one side of the vessel at a time and then spinning to load the other side, all from the north side of the dock.
