Agate Bay:

Yesterday, while on the way back from up the north shore, I noticed the morning rain had muddied up the normally clear waters of Agate Bay in Two Harbors. My main reason for stopping, though, was to catch the MV Walter J. McCarthy Jr. loading iron ore.

I’m back after a much-needed trip up the North Shore. Of course, I still managed to chase some boats. Yesterday evening, along the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior, the MV James R. Barker departed Silver Bay with a load of iron ore.

The Thunderbirds sure looked great against a blue sky during the Duluth Airshow! Here, Thunderbirds 1–4 climb together in a tight diamond formation before splitting apart and diving off in opposite directions. One of my favorite formations to watch.

There isn’t a whole lot happening here in Duluth as far as the ship schedule goes, so let’s take a look back at June 1st, when the MV BBC Genoa made a perfectly timed sunrise arrival in Duluth. The first-time visitor made a photogenic sight as the saltie entered port carrying machinery from overseas.

Salties in the fog:

A look back at the MV Federal Seto departing Duluth after the heavier fog finally lifted. As the saltie made its final approach to the canal, it passed by the MV Polsteam Dabie, which was loading wheat at the Bartlett Terminal.

Unloading Freedom:

Late-night photo session with the MV Federal Freedom. It was fun watching the cement powder unloading operations at the Ash Grove Terminal as the crew worked into the night. The bright orange lights really illuminated the dust as it drifted out and around the vessel.
