Last loads at SMET:

As mentioned before, we are closing in on the final days of operations at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal. With only a few coal loads believed to remain on the schedule, I wanted to make sure I got out to document the MV Hon. James L. Oberstar during its coal load this morning.

A stubborn cloud deck overhead kept the lighting from being ideal, but it was still neat to see its shadow cast across Spirit Mountain in the distance.

Welcome passengers:

Things are starting to pick up around Duluth as the city prepares to welcome tens of thousands of visitors for the 50th annual Grandma’s Marathon weekend. Kicking off the morning was the passenger vessel Victory II, making its second arrival of the season. With sunshine and calmer conditions compared to yesterday, it was a much nicer welcome for those arriving for what is typically the busiest weekend of the summer. A fan favorite, Viking Polaris is set to arrive on Sunday as well to add to the madness in Canal Park.

Yesterday evening, the MV Mesabi Miner passed through the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge upon arrival. The thousand-footer is in port to load iron ore at CN.

Tugging along:

Thanks for following along today, it was a great day of ship chasing. Shortly after the MV John G. Munson made its departure, tug Candace Elise and tank barge Robert F. Deegan followed the Munson out of Duluth this afternoon after unloading calcium chloride. In the distance, dredger Derrick 73 can be seen continuing its work in the harbor.

I have one more post from today to share, but that one will have to wait until tomorrow!

Sucker hole:

A break in the clouds appeared this morning after scattered rain showers moved through the area. For a few brief moments, the MV BBC Ukraine found itself in the spotlight just before its hatches were opened to begin loading wheat at the Bunge terminal. Meanwhile, hidden in the shadows, the long-laid-up MV Edward L. Ryerson rested quietly at Fraser Shipyards. This afternoon the MV BBC Ukraine has since departed with a load of wheat for overseas.

Six in one:

A unique opportunity presented itself this morning to capture six vessels in a single frame. Arriving during the early morning hours, the SS Alpena, who is the oldest active vessel on the Great Lakes, made its way into Duluth to unload cement into the J.A.W. Iglehart, which now serves as a storage facility.

In the background to the right, the MV BBC Ukraine became the first vessel to load wheat at the newly branded Bunge terminal. Adding three more vessels to the scene were those currently at Fraser Shipyards: the SS Wilfred Sykes, the MV Michipicoten, and the SS Edward L. Ryerson.

Departing light:

The MV John G. Munson completed its stone unload this morning after arriving yesterday evening. The 1952-built vessel departed empty and is now headed across Lake Superior to Marquette, where it will load iron ore for its next trip.
