Haven't seen too many Little Blue Heron's this year at Quonnie Pond. However, Marianne and I were lucky enough to spot a 1st year (juvenile) Little Blue in the early evening last night, with it's telltale greenish legs and feet, and blue-gray bill. While initially all white, they begin to show their beautiful blue-slate feathers the following spring, when they begin their "calico" (or mixed) phase - eventually turning fully blue-gray / blue in year 2. These young birds are easy to mistake for Snowy Egrets - so good to learn the important field markers to help distinguish the species (Black bill + yellow feet = Snowy Egret).

Brief stop at Hammonasset Beach State Park in CT on Tuesday early evening, on my way to our new townhome in Stamford. This will become a regular place to bird (especially during migration seasons) as it is a fantastic hotspot, with a range of shoreline habitat - including saltmarsh and tidal flats, freshwater ponds and open fields, as well as beach scrub, and deciduous forest. Lots of vagrant sightings over the years! Can't wait for September and October. . .

I love watching Gull-billed Tern's - they are such elegant fliers, as they swoop around for bugs in the sky (unlike most other terns that dive for dish). They also are scavengers, picking up lizards on the shore, or stealing food from other birds. With long wings, a heavy black bill, and a short, forked tail, they are a beautiful sight to behold IMO.

Fun return visit to the tip of the Delmar peninsula, where the birding is always good. Marianne and I have stopped there...

Fun return visit to the tip of the Delmar peninsula, where the birding is always good. Marianne and I have stopped there several times on our travels up and down the east coast, commuting between RI and St. Johns Cty Florida. On Wednesday, we visited the Magothy Bay Natural Area Preserve, which is part of / attached to the broader Eastern Shore of VA NWR. Here are some shots of several Grasshopper Sparrows we came across. While a common bird in steep decline (68% species decline since 1970) due to loss of habitat, some sub-species are critically endangered, such as the Florida grasshopper sparrow. Thanks to the great work of habitat stewards and professionals in St. Johns County (including St. Johns Regional Audubon and US Fish and Wildlife at the Welaka National Fish Hatchery), they are making a comeback!
