Spring has Sprung - finally! River valleys -- like the Knik River here -- are habitats teaming with plant and animal life. The meandering flow of the river over millennia deposited glacial silt rich in nutrients to support plants. Remnants of the river form muskeg, marsh, and ponds which are home to aquatic species, migrating songbirds and waterfowl, like the trumpeter swans below, beavers and otters, as well as larger species like moose.

"Morning has broken like the first morning
[Robin*] has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world..."

This Christian hymn written by Eleanor Farjeon in the 1930s was made popular by Cat Stevens in 1971 with the song "Morning Has Broken." * In the hymn the original bird was a Blackbird.

I believe we are seeing robins in greater numbers these days in the north. They have been bringing cheer to our cold and cloudy spring this year.

Staining - the Sandhill Crane in the back exhibits a good example of "staining." In the spring, cranes will coat their feathers with iron oxide rich mud (think rust) to help camouflage them for nesting in marsh vegetation.

Despite the persistent rains at the Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival this year, hummingbirds, like this Rufous Hummingbird, were plentiful at feeders. Now if they would only stay still for one second!

I saw a funny sign depicting bears recently. It said "Don't pet the fluffy dogs." Well, I passed this fluffy dog sitting along the road in a remote area of a military base in Alaska. It was attracted to a scent and seemed intent on staying put. While I was photographing it from a safe distance with a long telephoto lens, I even saw an approaching car turn around. They must have decided not to cross paths with this bear, er, I mean, fluffy dog!
