For me, being out in nature; exploring and taking photos makes me happy.

Getting lost in nature is my happy place ๐Ÿ’œ
Nature feeds and soothes the soul ๐Ÿ’œ

Yesterday I was able to get out and visit a couple of my favorite places. I started off out by Lake Erie at Tifft Nature Preserve

It was a hot day (for me anyways ๐Ÿซฃ) We were about 80 degrees F. Being out by the water it was supposedly cooler but I'm not sure I felt cooler ๐Ÿคฃ There was a nice breeze blowing through so the air wasn't stagnate with the heat. It was bright and sunny with beautiful blue skies and some white wispy clouds!

Prepared with all my heat reducing strategies, backpack and water I headed off into the preserve! The breeze carried the sounds of my surroundings... loved the sounds of the birds high up in the canopies of the trees.. out of sight but not out of hearing. Would catch a flash of color way up there sometimes but mostly enjoyed the sounds till later there were a few flying lower. Even though heat rises, maybe the leaves give them shade and it is cooler up there for them during the heat of the day!

Out on the boardwalk on the marsh I saw many painted turtles. In the past I have mostly seen them sunning themselves. Yesterday was a bit different... many were active!! They were walking on the logs, swimming, diving (well sliding off logs into the water ๐Ÿ˜‚), stretching, balancing, looking around! Here I did have some patience and this one heard me silently calling to it to look my way! How fun is that?!?!?

I was so lost in the moment just watching all the different turtles doing different things. Walking back and forth along the boardwalk. Lost track of time, worries and stress!!! Nature so wonderful!!! Loving the boardwalk that takes me out onto the marsh, so much to see at different times of the day and year!!

Painted Turtle Fun Facts

-During winter, they hibernate at the bottom of ponds. They can go up to five months without taking a breath, surviving by absorbing oxygen through their skin and enduring high levels of lactic acid.

-Like many turtles, the s*x of painted turtle hatchlings depends on the nest's temperature. Warmer temperatures produce females, while cooler temperatures yield males.

-Painted turtles lack tongues that move freely, meaning they must be in the water to eat, using the water to help them swallow their food.

-Their bodies can tolerate freezing weather! They have special substances in their blood similar to antifreeze that prevent their tissues from freezing solid.

-They love to sunbathe to raise their body temperature and rid themselves of leeches. More than 50 turtles have been seen stacked on top of each other on a single log

Today's is "Gulf Waves"

Heading back a few years on a trip to Florida's gulf coast, I was watching the waves come in and was hypnotized.

Walking the beach; sand beneath my feet, cool breeze off the water, the spray of mist as the waves crash on the shore, the fresh gulf air... watching the waves as they crested and crashed against the shoreline... then washed over the sand, sometimes up to my feet.

The sights, sounds and feel of the water is so soothing. So calming and relaxing. It's like the water just washes over me and takes all the stress/anxiety away! I love water! Standing there watching the water and the clouds dancing across the sky... so refreshing and rejuvenating!

Do you like water?
-----I love it all from raindrops to the ocean and everything in between!

Do you find water soothing and wonderful?
-----Absolutely!!!

Do water photos drawn you in?
-----yup!!

Today's is "Niagara River"

Over the weekend my event was at Niawanda Park on the shoreline of the Niagara River. This is a gorgeous view of the river with the sun glistening off the water! Saturday with the crazy winds finally starting to die down... look at the choppy water! It was a truly beautiful day with the sun shining, birds chirping, luscious greenery, blue skies, gorgeous clouds flying by and there were even some brave souls out in boats on the river, should've seen their boats moving lol didn't need the motor running ๐Ÿคฃ... just a tad less wind and it would've been perfect! (Sunday was!!)

Water is so calming. Even with the turbulence, waves crashing and feeling the spray it is still calming!

Stop... take a moment... just look around... take it all in... take a deep breath... even close eyes for a moment and just listen to the water... magical! soothing! wonderful!

There is a trail along the river with a bike/walking path, The Shoreline Trail and this is the Greenway Upper River section. This is part of the Empire State Trail.

Empire State Trail Fun Facts

-In 2017, New York State launched the Empire State Trail to promote outdoor recreation, encourage healthy lifestyles, support community vitality, and bolster tourism-related economic development.

The 750-mile Empire State Trail showcases New Yorkโ€™s special places, diverse history, and iconic landscapes.

-The Trail welcomes bicyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities to experience the Empire Stateโ€™s urban centers, village main streets, rural communities, and diverse history, from New York City through the Hudson River Valley, west to Buffalo along the Erie Canal, and north to the Champlain Valley and Adirondacks.

-The Empire State Trail connects New Yorkโ€™s extraordinary experiences, people, and places.

Shoreline Trail Fun Facts

-The Shoreline Trail in Western New York is a 40+ mile continuous off-road and paved pathway extending from Old Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario to Buffalo.

-It links multiple waterways, state parks, and urban centers while serving as a major regional section of the Empire State Trail.

-The Buffalo-to-Tonawanda section acts as a direct link to the statewide Empire State Trail, making it possible to bike from the Niagara region to New York City.

-An 8-mile stretch runs between north Buffalo and the City of Tonawanda, where it brings cyclists and walkers directly to the western entrance of the famed Erie Canal Trail.

-Comprising smaller connecting pathsโ€”such as the West River Shoreline Trail and Niagara Scenic Parkway Trailโ€”the entire 40.3-mile route is wheelchair accessible and entirely paved.

-The route perfectly traces the Niagara River, offering sweeping views of the Canadaโ€“United States border, as well as dramatic sights near Whirlpool State Park and Devilโ€™s Hole.

-In southern Erie County, the 13-mile Lake Erie coastline path connects six public parksโ€”including Evangola State Park and Bennett Beachโ€”and passes landmarks like Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff Estate

Greenway Upper River Fun Facts

-Its Upper River sectionโ€”stretching along the Niagara River from Buffalo towards Grand Islandโ€”is packed with fascinating history, wildlife, and engineering marvels

-The Upper Niagara River is an Important Bird Area (IBA) of international significance. Millions of waterfowl and gulls gather here for the winter, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers.
***(going to have to check this out at different times... lol always learning!!) ๐Ÿง

-The trail features the West River Shoreline Trail along Grand Island. This section gives you spectacular waterfront views, is completely paved and wheelchair accessible, and is popular for both walking and cycling.

-While riding or walking the trail, you get unparalleled views looking directly across the rushing river into Canada.

-Heading south from the Upper River towards the city, the trail passes Broderick Park. This historic site is the official Underground Railroad Freedom Memorial, marking a vital crossing point for freedom seekers in the 1800s.
***(something else to check out!)๐Ÿง

-This route is a major component of the massive Erie County Shoreline Trail network and the Empire State Trail, which aims to seamlessly connect Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

Today's is "The Way Nature Bends"

Walking through parks I see all stages of lifecycle for all the different elements. After trees have weathered many storms, and finally succumbed ... nature still creates fascinating magic! Look at the way the trees have bent and made a little archway! The bends and twists and turns. Calling to be investigated, explored and enjoyed! Of course had to go check it out and follow the path ๐Ÿ˜ I find it all so beautiful and relaxing.

Do paths call to you to be explored?
Do you go investigate the way trees have fallen and make different formations?
Do you find beauty in all the different stages of the lifecycle of trees or nature in general?

Today's photo "The Sunning Skimmer"

This was taken 2 years ago at Reinstein Woods from the boardwalk out to Lily Pond. You can see a lily pad in the background. It was a beautiful summer day, warm with a breeze off the pond. Peaceful with the sights and sounds of nature surrounding and soothing!

Crouched down on the end of the boardwalk, looking between the beams of the railing I was able to watch these beauties flit, flutter, fly and dart around! All through the reeds and grasses! Fast flashes of color! They are quick little things! Never staying in one spot long!

With the sun shining this one looked like it was sunning itself, absorbing the warmth of the sun's embrace. Love how the sun glistens off the wings! He stayed still long enough for me to snap this photo and it looks like he was actually posing for me, so picture perfect! All it takes is a moment! LOL he knew I was watching and put on a show for me! I loved it! This one I love how he is nestled into the vegetation, kind of blended in yet standing out at the same time! Patience paid off... and it was quite easy actually since I was enjoying watching them ๐Ÿ’œ

Widow Skimmer Fun Facts

-The Widow Skimmer is a common, large North American dragonfly known for its distinct wing markings and hovering abilities.

-Their name comes from the dark patches at the base of their transparent wings, which resemble the dark mourning crepe or shawls once worn by widows.

-Unlike some other dragonfly species, male Widow Skimmers do not guard the female while she lays her eggs. Once mating is done, the male leaves the female on her ownโ€”or "widows" herโ€”as she flicks eggs into the water.

-Males and females look so wildly different they are often mistaken for two entirely different species. Adult males have a powdery blue-white abdomen and white midwing spots, whereas females and immature males have a brown abdomen with a black stripe and yellow stripes on the sides.

- Male Widow Skimmers are active fliers who love to claim and vigorously patrol territories around ponds, lakes, and marshes. They will fiercely chase off rival males and even other species of dragonflies that intrude on their turf.

-Like other dragonflies, they are brilliant aerial predators that eat hundreds of flying insects. They perch on tall vegetation scanning for prey, dart out to catch them in mid-air with their legs, and return to their perch to eat. They are particularly beneficial for keeping mosquito populations in check. --- (definite benefit!!)

-They have massive compound eyes that take up most of their heads, granting them nearly a 360-degree range of vision. This allows them to spot prey from incredible distances.

-Because they love still, artificial bodies of water, this dragonfly species actually expanded its territory northward alongside human habitat alterations like farm ponds and reservoirs.

-The Widow Skimmer averages just under two inches in length. And their wingspan is approximately 3 to 3.5 inches

Today's photo "Snakey"

I bit different subject for me ๐Ÿคฃ
I do not usually go looking for the snakes ๐Ÿคฃ
While walking at Tifft Nature Preserve one day this one just was sitting alongside the path and watching. It blends in so well it's a good thing I was looking down at that moment!

This one got my attention and I was just watching. Look at the little twig that is balanced on the one side of it's head. It stayed there for a few moments before it unwound and slithered away!
Interesting little creature.

Common Garter Snake Fun Facts

They are frequently miscalled "garden snakes," but their actual name comes from the striped patterns that resemble old-fashioned garters used to hold up men's socks.

They are ovoviviparous, meaning they do not lay eggs. The mother carries her young inside her body and gives birth to litters of live snakelets, which are fully independent at birth.

Unlike solitary snake species, garter snakes are highly social. They even form "friendships," actively choosing to spend time with specific snakes from their group.

To survive the winter, they gather in massive underground dens (hibernacula), sometimes with thousands of snakes tangled together to share body heat.

Their primary diet consists of frogs, toads, and salamanders.

Garter snakes possess a natural resistance to tetrodotoxin, an incredibly potent poison secreted by their amphibian prey.

While not deadly to humans, they do have a mild, paralyzing venom in their saliva that helps them subdue live prey.

Since they do not constrict their prey or pose a lethal threat to large predators, they rely on speed, camouflage, and a highly foul-smelling musk that they release when threatened.
