It's time for Adstalgia Friday's where we appreciate the ad campaigns that did more than annoy us. Today: Orbit Gum "Dirty Mouth"

People in frustrating situations were about to drop F-bombs, but instead said ridiculous clean substitutes like "What the French toast?!" or "Son of a biscuit!" Then the Orbit lady appeared with her perfectly polished accent: "Dirty mouth? Clean it up with Orbit." The ads were hilarious because they acknowledged what we all wanted to say but couldn't. They made gum the polite way to handle your anger.

For small businesses: Sometimes the best marketing acknowledges the elephant in the room - or in this case, the curse word on everyone's tongue. Meet your customers in their real, messy moments and offer your product as the solution. Don't pretend life is perfect; show how your business helps people handle the imperfect parts with a little more grace (or fresh breath).

It's time for Adstalgia Friday's where we appreciate the ad campaigns that did more than annoy us. Today: "Dude, You're Getting a Dell!"

Steven the Dell Dude made buying computers feel like talking to your skateboarding buddy instead of a tech expert. He used "dude" in every sentence and somehow convinced people that Dell computers were the cool choice. The campaign took a boring tech purchase and made it relatable through authentic youth culture language. Until it became a parody of itself, it worked perfectly.

For small businesses: Speak your customers' language, not industry jargon. Match their energy, their slang, their vibe. The Dell Dude worked because he sounded like the people buying computers, not like a corporate salesperson. Know how your customers actually talk and mirror it. Authenticity in communication builds instant connection.

It's time for Adstalgia Friday's where we appreciate the ad campaigns that did more than annoy us. Today: Little Caesars "Pizza! Pizza!"

Two pizzas for the price of one, communicated in the simplest possible way: "Pizza! Pizza!" No elaborate storytelling, no celebrity endorsements - just a value proposition so clear a toddler could understand it. The repetition of the word "pizza" made it impossible to forget. Little Caesars made their entire brand about one simple promise and shouted it from the rooftops.

For small businesses: Clarity beats cleverness. If you can communicate your core value in two words that everyone understands, you've won. Stop burying your unique selling point in paragraphs of copy. Find your "Pizza! Pizza!" - the simplest way to tell people why they should choose you.

It's time for Adstalgia Friday's where we appreciate the ad campaigns that did more than annoy us. Today: E-Trade Baby

A talking baby in front of a computer, casually discussing stock trading and investments. E-Trade took the most intimidating topic - investing your money - and made it seem so easy a baby could do it. The absurdity was the point. They removed the fear factor from online trading by making it ridiculous, approachable, and entertaining. Complex became simple through humor.

For small businesses: If your industry is known for being complicated, intimidating, or boring - lean into the opposite. Use humor and simplicity to break down barriers. The E-Trade baby made stock trading feel accessible. What's the equivalent for your business? How can you make your complicated thing feel simple and approachable?
