Sorry not sorry. I have been waiting to write this review since before I saw the dress! Because of style and length I was unable to list everyone. This musical is SO GOOD!! Here's my Seussical Review and some photos I took from last night's production of SEUSSICAL!
The day was quite sunny, no clouds in the way, as I drove into Lansing to catch my last play.
I sat in the third row, not too high or too low, the perfect position for photographing the show.
I listened to singing as warm up continued and a test mic or two was a part of the prelude.
From top to the bottom and bottom to top, the stage was adorned in Seus’s creation, nonstop.
There were bright, puffy trees, of prime colors galore and smack in the middle was The Cat’s Hat on the floor.
After all the lights dimmed and Tom welcomed us in, the adventure of Seussical was about to begin.
It started with one, a wee speck of a lad, in a brightly striped t-shirt, and freckles he had. He spotted that hat, all alone on the floor, and immediately rushed to see what it bore.
A familiar voice sprang about and with a laugh and a jest, inviting young JoJo to join in the fest. So much fun that they’ll have as they travel through stories, of Horton and Gertrude and Whos full of worry.
The stories are fun, warmly familiar, I say, but the musical numbers will blow you away! There’s too many to name, I won’t even say, make your way to the theatre it’s the only true way.
But there’s Miss Mayzie (Xia Skowronek) flashing red and a smile. She convinces poor Horton to rear her own child.
Now Horton, that’s Brian (Farnham), he’s quick to assist, helping dust worlds, and lonely eggs, and one, two, three fish.
And Poor Gertrude McFuzz is all in a flutter, acted superbly by Zoe Schultheiss who doesn’t even stutter. She makes herself friends with our old softy Horton, who doesn’t even notice how much she adores him.
And the Whos down in Whosville are all ran by the mayor, a sweet gentle man who must have a good tailor. He’s dressed all Who’d out in their threads bright and fresh and his cute little wife is adorned by the best. Parker Auten, the Mayor and Laura Johnson, his wife, are counting on Horton to protect them from strife.
Above and around is The Cat in The Hat, a devilish, beguiling, chaotic ol’ chap. The trickiest trickster, the manipulative fixer, The Cat in the Hat serves a hypnotic elixir. Taren Going is perfect as the Cat in the Hat, with flamboyant gestures, perfect pitch; never flat. I’d watch and I’d listen to every word that was spoken, It was all so amazing, I’m not even jokin’.
I hope you can all go into town like I did, take part in this musical that’s definitely not mid. It’s fun and it’s fancy, an absolute MUST SEE, on the docket from June 4-7 and June 11-14.
