Supercell Sunday - LP (low precipitation) edition!

LP supercells typically are very photogenic storms, especially when the light it just right! There low precipitation characteristic allows you to see more of the rotating structure, and can also allow more light to shine thru giving way to some very photogenic scenes! Check out some of these incredible LPs from over the years!

Nighttime Supercells!

Seeing these spaceship supercells go into the night can be some of the coolest skys you'll see in tornado alley. The lightning these storm produce can make them look so fierce. It also can make it nearly impossible to perfectly capture as the dark night tries to hide the beasts brought to light by the lightning they produce. Another cool thing about nighttime supercells is they typically can have some of the most wild structures as the convective inhibition (cap) increases with the loss of daytime heating. This allows for the storms to get very laminar and to become layered/striated, some of which will make your jaw drop!!

Bando Bolt!

Managed to capture only 1 bolt yesterday and it was a GOOD one! It managed to land nearly dead center of frame and right behind the abandoned homestead! Pretty happy with this one!

Colorado MONSOON!!!
The last couple days have been pretty good for the Monsoon in Colorado. After being in a heat dome for the better half of the last 2 weeks, we finally have gone back into a wetter/stormier pattern. Lightning is one of my most favorite things to capture, and ANY time I see potential for storms to produce tall branchy bolts, you can count me in! This week featured mainly Blue Hour bolts. For whatever reason, the night-time bolts and day-time bolts were hard to come by haha. Got some bangers in there...no pun intended!

Wellfleet Wednesday!

This storm was on a whole different level. Getting a structured supercell is one thing, but combining that with an extremely photogenic, long duration tornado push it into the unimaginable/unfathomable category. I remember while capturing this scene being in complete shock and unable to process emotion properly. I know this kind of combination is rare and im incredibly grateful to have been there to witness it! By the way, prints available on these, and on any of my images you see posted here!

Tornado TUESDAY!!!

Have you all ever seen lightning striking with a tornado before?? How about one that pierces the edge of it? Back in June of 2023, I got to experience some WILD lightning with an ongoing dusty tornado! What I walked away with was some of the craziest Lightning/Tornado combo images I've ever taken!!! The lightning barrage from this storm was some of the craziest close range bolts I've ever seen! The 2nd image has upward leaders off the power poles!

High Plains Magic!!!

A day that didn't look so good the morning of model wise turned out to be one of the TOP chase days of my 2023 season!!! A hunch that a storm would form off the Cheyenne Ridge paid off in a BIG WAY! This wedding cake style supercell structure stunned us all with some of the best Structure I've seen in Western Nebraska still to this date! This storm produced a few tornadoes along its path as well, one of which was VERY photogenic just before sunset! It was a heck of a storm!

Supercell Sunday!!!!!

This INCREDIBLE Supercell tracked over 200 miles across Nebraska showcasing some high end structure along the way! It was definitely one of my top chases of 2024. What was really neat was all the different styles this storm took on. It transitioned several times from being discrete and very round/structured to more of as outflow dominate storm with many mean looking layers! It even took on a brief MEAN green phase that really showcased how powerful this storm was!

Structure Saturday!

This insane barberpole supercell impressed us all with exceptional supercell structure and some amazing filament/coiled lightning. The storm really came to life after sunset during Blue Hour making for some pretty colors and textures to go with the structure! All three of these images were taken within just a few minutes of each other and you can really see how the structure morphed into a giant barberpole supercell!
