All dogs get old. You start to notice the white showing up on their face, they slow down a little around the house, and eventually you can just tell that age is catching up with them. After more than thirty years around hunting dogs, I have become all too familiar with this stage of their lives. None of us want those days to come, but they always will, and that is why I choose to do everything I can to give back to my dogs while I have them. They give their entire lives to me. They give me 100 percent night after night in the woods, and when we come home they love my kids with their whole heart. They deserve that same effort in return. Since I started giving my dogs Field & Stream Pack Provisions supplements, I have noticed a dramatic difference in their mood, energy levels and mobility, especially in those special dogs you really count on night after night. Don’t wait until you can see old age setting in to start thinking about taking care of their bodies. Keep them healthy, keep them in shape and give them the tools to operate and recover properly. Trust me from experience, when that day eventually comes, you don’t want to look back and wonder what else you could have done. Next time you’re out, stop by Tractor Supply and pick up some for your dogs. They spend their entire lives giving everything they have to us. The least we can do is give some of it back.

Some September memories have a way of sticking with you forever. A boy with his first sh***un, an old break action .410 that belonged to his grandfather, his first set of camo, and the first dove he ever harvested. There are newer guns, newer clothes and a thousand different ways we could have done all of this, but I wouldn’t change a thing about this picture. Three generations tied together by an old sh***un and a September evening in the backyard. These are the kinds of memories I hope my kids carry with them and someday pass down to their own.

Cold mornings, coffee in the kitchen, damp leaves under your boots, the smell of dirt and cut corn, acorns hitting the ground and that first patch of sunlight working its way through the timber. Sitting with a bow beside you as the woods slowly come to life. Friday evenings eating dinner with the family before heading to the local high school football game, the stadium lights glowing against the night sky, the marching band playing and the smell of popcorn coming from the concession stand. Then Saturday morning it is back to the woods, watching daylight creep through the trees and listening for that unmistakable sound of a deer walking through dry leaves. Fall is almost here, and I am ready for every bit of it.

Having kids brought back a passion and appreciation for the little things I had started taking for granted. When I was a kid, I lived to go into the woods and explore. Sometimes I had a slingshot, sometimes a .22, and sometimes it was just me and my bare feet seeing what I could find. Looking back now, I realize how important those days were, and how much time I eventually started wasting in the woods focused on success instead of enjoying everything that happens along the way. Teaching my kids how to read sign, find tracks, identify what they’re looking at and showing them everything the woods has to offer has become my absolute favorite part of being outdoors. I get to experience all of those little things again, only this time through their eyes. Fall is almost here, and I cannot wait to get them back in the woods and hopefully following another blood trail together.

The importance of a good wife. This past weekend was Autumn Oaks, and for the first time we decided to take the entire family. A long road trip and a busy event with four young children is never easy, and because I was essentially working throughout the weekend, a lot of the responsibility of taking care of our kids fell on my wife. Like always, she did a phenomenal job. I watched her keep four kids happy, involved and well behaved through long days without simply sticking a screen in front of them to keep them occupied. That’s something we have both been intentional about from the beginning. We want to be present in our children’s lives, teach them how to behave in public and let them actually experience the places we take them. This weekend reminded me how much of that is possible because of the woman I married. She’s an incredible wife, an incredible mother and the person beside me making this entire life work while I chase some pretty big dreams for our family. I don’t tell her thank you nearly enough for everything she does. So if you know a great wife and mother, and especially if you’re fortunate enough to be married to one, make sure you tell her how much you appreciate her today.
