Every military move asks our kids to leave something behind.

A favorite playground. A best friend. A bedroom wall covered in growth marks. A pool where they spent an entire summer being little.

Yesterday was just an ordinary afternoon.

Two girls splashing, laughing, and staying in the water until closing time.

But military life has taught me that ordinary days don’t stay ordinary forever.

That’s why I take the photos.

Not because every moment is monumental, but because one day these are the moments we’ll miss the most.

Fort Bliss wasn’t your first choice.

But it’s where your kids grew up.

One day they’ll talk about the neighborhood kids, the desert sunsets, the playgrounds, and the life you built here.

Don’t wait until PCS orders are in hand to realize these were the days worth remembering.

I LOVE my new photos!

I never regret having photos up on my walls, to be seen on a daily basis. I have caught myself just stopping to admire them. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Now I just hope the movers don’t break them when it’s time to pack up in a year or so. IYKYK 🫠

A few years ago, I learned this lesson the hard way.

I lost almost every photo and video from 2018 through part of 2019.

Almost all of Raegan’s first year.

Gone.

The sleepy newborn snuggles. The blurry selfies from long nights. The little videos of baby coos and giggles I swore I’d never forget. Everyday moments that felt ordinary at the time, but became priceless the second they disappeared.

I remember the sinking feeling when I realized there was no way to get them back.

As military families, we know better than most that life changes quickly. Deployments happen. PCS moves happen. Homecomings come and go. Babies grow up while someone is away. Seasons of life end before we’re ready.

The photos that matter most usually aren’t the perfect ones.

They’re the ones that prove you were there.

The hand holding yours.
The bedtime routine.
The way your child looked at their dad after months apart.
The ordinary Tuesday that didn’t feel important until it was gone.

Losing those images changed the way I document my life.

Now I make sure my family’s story exists somewhere other than my phone.

Because memories deserve a backup plan.

This weekend always makes me think how fragile ordinary life really is.

Tiny hands holding flags. Homecomings. Missed birthdays. Late nights, long days. Long months.

But also, the quiet understanding that not all military families get their homecomings. There isn’t always a tomorrow and living with that kind of uncertainty is hard.

This weekend is not about a four day, a beach party, the beginning of summer, or even a BBQ. It’s about someone’s life. Look it up, find a name, a pledge to honor THEM because they died for you.

Make the ordinary moments extraordinary, and BE in the moment.

The night before he left we went all out.

We made daddy’s favorite dinner and then ICE CREAM SUNDAE PALOOZA for dessert. We got different flavors and then a multitude of toppings to each “dress” our own.

The girls loved fancy dinner and required me and Kev to dress up. I changed back into PJs so fast. We watched a movie together and then, it was bedtime.

There’s something about time speeding up before they have to go, but slowing down while they’re gone. ❤️
