HydroFlex was THERE!
All through the '90s, HydroFlex supported the original Baywatch series with a lot underwater gear. In 1990 we developed a lightweight, fiberglass housing for the ARRI 35-3 for surface level shooting to help get their action water sequences. 36 years later, HydroFlex is HERE, once again providing reliable underwater camera housings and lights for Baywatch reboot! They used our flagship, RAC Mk5 housing with a Sony Venice and our new Baby RAC with a Sony FX3 & Panavision Lenses. And now we've also brought in the Bubblecam PTZ underwater camera for behind the scenes witness cam work. With pan, tilt and zoom controls remotely operated via a laptop, Director, AD, DIT & all crew can check in on the bigger picture underwater to see where everybody is, not just the feed from the taking camera.
HydroFlex was there!
HydroFlex is here.

Our sweet little Baby Remote Aqua Cam is in house for a quick tuneup. Looks like the Baywatch crew is trying to adopt it! The BabyRAC can fit a variety of cameras including the Blackmagic Mini Rialto & Freefly Ember but for Baywatch it’s set up with a Sony FX3, Panavision glass a Preston MDR3 and Hedén motors for the cramped quarters. Definitely 10lbs of 💩 in a 5lb housing!

We’re excited for the opening of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey tomorrow and honored to have played a small part supporting to keep large format film alive! We first built custom IMAX splashbags for Nolan’s Dunkirk. A “studio” style for use on heads & cranes and a “handheld” style for the madman, Hoyte van Hoytema to put up on his shoulder! For Odyssey, they asked us to protect the rare Trumbullflex 60mm high speed camera. Because of the urgency we had to build the bag from neoprene wetsuit material instead of our usual RF welded material. It worked! ,

HydroFlex is proud to announce our latest addition to our family of agents, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil and covering all of South America. Our inaugural collaboration was a new Production of Ben Hur which shot in two different massive water tanks... an Ocean Wave Tank at the University in Rio de Janeiro and the Ocean Tank. The underwater operators were and
We're very excited to now have underwater camera housings, splashbags and a wide range of underwater lighting in a well-maintained inventory in Brazil! These folks were serious enough to fly into our shop in El Segundo to get trained for a week in the proper care and feeding of our gear. Looking forward to serving many South American productions together!

May we also note that kind and welcoming smile of our dear departed Geri Baur, may she rest in peace...

We’ve shipped! Two HydroFlex RAC housings for ARRI 435 cameras. And NOW, proud to say we can CAPTURE with an HD video tap thanks to the snazzy new HD tap from .devices! Previously we had to upres from NTSC to HD. This is a significant improvement to the video tap image to the underwater monitor and video village. Mothco’s low profile allows it to fit in the housing, albeit with a slight modification… Big thanks to Oliver & Mason for the attentive support!

Refurbishing one of our two last Panaflex splashbags! There was a time when we had dozens of them… Panaflex 1000’ backload with a zoom (like this one), 1000’ top load with zoom and another for primes, PV XL 400’ load, primes/zoom, etc. A different bag for every configuration. Originally designed to protect cameras for The Perfect Storm and Castaway in 2000, we went on to improve & evolve them for more cameras for Master and Commander, Poseidon Adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean, even The Mummy for sandy desert use.
But film still lives! We have this and another for an ARRI 435 going out on A Quiet Place 3 next week. Also setting up two underwater housings for 435s for the same show.
We’re curious, who else is taking film underwater out there? Let us know!

Friday Flashback💥

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 6: FALLOUT (2018)

In this sequence Simon Pegg (Benji) has been arrested and it’s up to Ethan Hunt’s team to break him out. They roll the police van into a river, then rescue him underwater.

💧Van body was mounted in a gimbal that simulated the rolling motion as it enters the water. Two HydroFlex RAC MK 5’s, holding Panavision DXLs, are mounted at the rear of the open shell.

💧Underwater lighting was provided by HydroPar M1 5k’s. The tube lights were our underwater HydroFlows (kino lights - before programmable astera and titan tubes came on the scene)

💧Filming Benji’s rescue (hanging upside down) by a team of divers swimming in through the boot door.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie
DOP: Rob Hardy
UW DP: Pete Romano ASC
UW AC: Loren Elkins
UW Gaffer: Aaron Keating
UW Grip: Dan Travers
….plus a great crew of divers!
