Some dogs come into our lives when we need them most.
Ten years ago, Hank’s family was walking through one of the most difficult seasons of their lives. Looking for a way to heal their hearts, they opened their home to a 7 year old rescue dog. What they couldn’t have known then was just how much this little dog would change their lives.
Hank didn’t just become part of their family..he became part of their story.
Over the years, he has been a loyal companion, protector, comedian, and best friend. He welcomed three little boys into the family and has watched over them their entire lives. His parents shared that one of their greatest joys has been watching their children and dogs grow up together, playing side by side and filling their home with laughter.
Like every dog, Hank has his quirks. He has always had a taste for adventure… and apparently insects. His family shared stories of the time he ate a bumble bee and then spent the rest of his life enthusiastically pursuing dragonflies, bees, and flies whenever the opportunity presented itself. Human food was also high on his list of favorite things, especially chicken breast, apples, carrots, cherries, and blueberries.
Before arthritis and age began slowing him down, Hank loved being active. He enjoyed walks with his family, his beloved “pack”, and racing along the fence line convincing the neighborhood dogs to chase him. These days, movement is harder. Hank is 17 years old now, and arthritis is makes getting around painful, and ongoing GI issues have taken away some of the simple pleasures he once enjoyed. He can no longer run, jump onto the furniture, or enjoy all the foods he loves.
But despite the challenges that come with age, the things that matter most are still here.
He still lights up when he’s with his people. He still finds comfort curled up in their laps. He still melts into a good ear scratch.
During his session, those ear scratches brought out the sweetest little grumbles of happiness. It was impossible not to smile hearing them. In those moments, surrounded by the people who love him most, you could see exactly who Hank has always been.
End of life sessions are never easy. They are filled with love, gratitude, laughter, and heartbreak all at the same time. They remind us that while our time with our dogs is never long enough, the love they leave behind lasts forever.
Thank you, Hank, for being exactly the dog your family needed. ❤️
