Landscape Photographer Based Out of the Highlands of West Virginia I was using a Minolta SLR back then, but I currently shoot Canon.

Born and raised in West Virginia, I took up photography at motorsports events sometime in the early 2000's. COVID kind of forced me to switch gears from motorsports to landscapes, and I just kind of fell in love with that type of photography that it's pretty much all I do. I try to focus on the lesser known locations and the unique. I'm a big fan of the hidden gems, places that only I or a handful

of people know about. Streams are my favorite subjects to photograph, followed closely by woodland scenes. I'm a big fan of anything covered in fog as well. I do shoot a variety of scenes, however, as my tastes are pretty eclectic. I believe there should be a climate that goes from spring to fall then back to spring. I would move wherever has that in a heartbeat. I am a member of the Pocahontas County Artisans Co-Op, based out of Marlinton, WV with galleries there at the old depot on 4th Ave., and in Cass, WV just across from their train depot. You can also find my work at Scarlet & Gray in Thomas, WV, I have matted 5x7s and unmatted 8x10s there right alongside some of my Dad's work.

I finally got a chance to shoot at this spot I’ve been eyeing for a while. With higher water levels and getting there right at the end of the day, I’d say I had some pretty good conditions too.

After checking out John’s Run a little while back I made my way down to Shavers right around sunset. There was light fog in places, which of course I had to try and find somewhere to photograph that. I was reminded why the saying is “chasing fog” and not “dillydallying in fog,” although any phrase that uses dillydallying is automatically better in my book. I ended up under a bridge (not uptown though) to find a good enough angle of the fog and by then it was well into the night. Here’s said spot under the bridge and then one from on top of the bridge. Also one of the last bit of light that day hitting some trees I thought was cool.

Here’s one from a semi-panicked, very last minute dash out Shavers Fork Road, chasing a little bit of fog, trying to find something worth photographing before it got too dark. I was drawn that night to the curved lines in this first one, just like I was drawn to the curved lines in the last two from Coopers Rock.

I don’t visit Coopers Rock that often, but I gotta say, it’s just as photogenic as anywhere here in the highlands that I do visit regularly. These are from the Virgin Hemlock Trail, taken on an evening that unfortunately was cut short by a torrential downpour. I didn’t make it back in time either, but that’s okay because I had been miserably hot all day and that rain felt great!

Heavy metal cloud. 🤘
After the sunbeams and fantastic, golden light that evening there was also a pretty decent sunset, during which more and more dark clouds slowly took over the sky until this big meany showed up and told me to git.

They say third time is a charm (who are they anyway?) and I’d have to say they’re right in this case. My third trip in a row, all to the North Fork Mountain trail, for my third time ever up there, I saw some of the best light I’ve seen anywhere.

This is easily one of my favorite trees to photograph. I caught it at the right time, too, as the light was amazing just before the sun went behind the hill. There’s a couple more from along the trail nearby, a bunch of ferns and that same last of the day sunlight on a million red spruce branches.
