When I say blue is my favourite colour:

I can’t quite explain why. Maybe it’s the calm to my chaos; the cool to my fire.

Maybe it represents the depth of what we can’t quite understand or fathom: the expanse of the skies and oceans, the atmosphere, the flow of time.

Curiosity, in a colour, perhaps.

Knowing your value as a creative 💭

As artists we often question our value, our pricing, how people perceive the “worth” of our art or services…

But there’s nothing more powerful than reflecting on what it actually take to do what we do: the knowledge; the climbs; the gear and training; the field experience; the unspoken nuances and creative vision of it all.

Even in creating my prints, I reminded myself of everything that went into that process:

• the idea & the planning
• the early alarms & long drives
• the big days of hiking and climbing
• the game of luck for weather & conditions
• the technical craft to capture it right
• the hours of editing & colour work
• the test prints & proofing until it’s perfect
• the choice of archival, museum-grade paper
• the printer I love and trust with the details
• the personal touch of signing & numbering

“If you want lower price, seek lower value” is a respectful way of saying “if you don’t see the value of my work, look elsewhere”. It took me a long time to learn that, and I’m still working on it.

Do you still question your value as an artist?

I don’t believe any of my photos are “perfect”…

But that’s never been the point. The point is to get out and experience the mountains, and if I’m lucky, translate some of that feeling of awe and curiosity through a lens.

There’s perfect moments though, where perfection is just a small, understated detail that feels big. Like the perfectly calm lake that makes a beautiful mirror of the mountain it frames. Or like the few minutes where the moon rises and perfectly nestles in the nook of a ridge.

Anyway these are a bunch of images I quite like. I hope you like em too. 🫶

PS. Yes I realize the photo of me is holding a film camera but all of these in the set were shot on 5d mkIV

Burning Man 2025… aka “Learning Man” 💃😬

It stormed. It rained. For days.

Of course there were breaks and wonderful moments in between but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t challenging.

On Tuesday I was with Arctica wayyy on the other side of playa relative to our camp. An hour in, the radios called for a shut down: big storm incoming. I saw it - no way I’d beat it home (aka find shelter and leave bikes behind).

So I ran into the plaza, and saw these two guys sitting on their “porch” (yeah, a literal beautiful wooden porch placed by the side of the road) and asked if I could hang with them. They were super kind and invited me over and we shot the s**t til the rain stopped an hour later.

“Yeah, people call it Mudman or Rainman or whatever… I think of it as Learning Man” the one dude said. We all laughed, in agreement and appreciation of our years here. I LOVED that…

We learn about how to contribute to community,

how we deal with harsh environments
how to prepare for all scenarios
how to not f*ck your bike up in the mud
how we embrace new and old friends
how to prioritize rest (or the opposite lol)
how not to chase after “experiences”
how to ask for help
how to help even when it’s not asked for
how to stay curious…

Just to name a few. I appreciated the rain for that… even when I hated it sometimes 🙃

And of course, after all those days of rain and storms came gorgeous weather, stunning sunsets, all-nighters with our closest friends, and more pleasant memories than I can recall at once.

I learned a lot this burn. That was fun.

I also learned I don’t want to have my camera with me all the time. Well I already knew that but actively embraced it this time around. Only took a few film shots, some on the 3D (more to scan) and then the old Pentax. That’s all I needed 🤍

There’s no place like “home” 🔥

Just returned from my 9th burn… it’s amazing how much each year is truly its own unique experience.

One night, I climbed up a large art piece to watch another installation burn. A friendly stranger asked if he could join me, and we chatted about how our weeks were going - this was 8 burns for him. “Yeah, we’re sophomore burners” he said, which I was surprised about because nearly a decade feels like a pretty long stretch…

“In Latin, it means ‘wise fool’” he explained, and we both immediately cracked up laughing. He was spot on - we were “old enough” to have accumulated a decent amount of wisdom and experience here, but still fools with much more to learn. It was a perfect analogy.

Moments like these, random encounters with new humans, unexpected experiences and connection… all in this wild desert environment (which often kicks the sh*t out of us)… they really stick with you.

And that’s why I keep going back.

This year was a bit of a rollercoaster. But I wouldn’t take any of it back. I’ll share more on that soon, but in the meantime here’s some of my favourite images from over the years. I didn’t take my camera out to playa this year… didn’t feel like shooting. Can’t explain why, but regardless just felt the need to just “be” there…

That was nice.

Well, yesterday was “World Photography Day”…

So either I’m late… orrrr time is a construct and photographs are timeless? 🙃

Regardless, a great opportunity to appreciate that:

photography IS art
photography is timeless
photography is documentation
photography is experimentation

And, as cool as AI can be (I also think it’ll destroy the world but maybe that’s a bit dark), AI can never replace the human experience of capturing light through a lens.

Mega grateful to have created a life where I get to create and experiment with cameras. Here’s a small collection of my favourite images made over the last few years. 🤘

Still can’t believe this was already a month ago. Times has flown, I’m perpetually behind on editing (to be fair I’ve hardly been home 😬) and loving every moment I have to revisit these memories.

Hatteras Camp was one for the books. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it, my sincere gratitude to all the lovely guests, our rad team of staff, the .ca guides and volunteer leads for making these camps possible and simply the best. More to come… until then enjoy this set of stunning views and epic humans.

Is my propaganda working? Have I convinced you to join next year’s GMC yet? 😉

“Sorry, I am currently out-of-office…”

No, actually 😬. This is an automated post while I am blissfully offline at this year’s General Mountaineering Camp.

This will be my third year with the camp, this time in the Hatteras Range (not far from the Bugaboos) exploring glaciers, summiting rarely touched mountains with a rad group of humans…

It’s basically summer camp for adults who like big rocks 😝.

The images shown here are from the previous two GMC’s in their own insanely stunning locations. Can’t wait to share the beauty from this year’s experience (when I eventually return to reality).
