Washingtons Unite Quilt Exhibition
America 250 Washington County NC

At the heart of this special America250 and America 250 NC exhibition is the Washingtons Unite quilt — a remarkable quilt composed of squares representing Washington counties from across America, stitched together into one celebration of our shared history and heritage.

Surrounding it is a beautiful collection of quilts from Washington County, North Carolina, showcasing the artistry, craftsmanship, and quilting traditions of Bearolina.

Here are a few glimpses from opening day, but the photographs only tell part of the story. The colors, patterns, stitching, and incredible details are well worth seeing in person.

Patience, grasshopper. 🌺🦗

Caught this little guy enjoying the flowers. Grasshoppers may do their share of munching, but they’re also an important part of the food web — providing food for birds, frogs, lizards, and other wildlife.

It’s easy to look at something chewing on a favorite flower and call it a pest. But nature rarely works in such simple categories. What’s a nuisance to the gardener may be supper for a songbird raising its young.

Everybody has a place and a purpose — even the ones eating your flowers.

Still Running

There’s something about old iron that reminds you of a few simple truths.

Show up. Do the work. Take care of what’s been entrusted to you. And do it well.

For generations, that’s what a good day’s work looked like — acres before sundown, fences mended, crops gathered, and a job finished right.

The tools have changed. So has the way we work. But work done well still matters.

It doesn’t always get noticed. It doesn’t always get praised. Sometimes the reward is simply knowing you gave your best to something worth doing.

That seems worth remembering this Labor Day.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23

Mama’s Munchkins. 🐻🌱

At first glance, you might see Mama and one cub — but look closely. Just an ear poking above the soybeans gives away the second cub hiding in the thick foliage.

A mature soybean field can offer black bears both a rich food source and remarkable cover. Even a cub can nearly disappear among the leaves while staying close to Mama.

Sometimes the wildest part of a picture is the part you almost miss.

🚨 Red Alert!

When a male Red-winged Blackbird flashes those brilliant red-and-yellow shoulder patches, he’s making sure he gets noticed!

Called epaulets, these colorful patches play an important role in territorial displays and attracting a mate. When he wants to make a statement, he can puff his feathers and put that red on full display.

A little flash of red can say a whole lot.

A little milestone for Carolina Psalms. 📸

I’m excited to share that I’ll be having my very first solo photography show!

What began simply as a love for capturing the wildlife, landscapes, events, and quiet moments around me has grown into something I never really expected. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share a little of that journey through my photographs.

A special thank you to the Martin County Arts Council for giving me this opportunity and for supporting the arts and artists in our community.

And to my family and friends — thank you for all the encouragement, support, and belief in me along the way. It has meant more than you know.

I hope you’ll come see the show, enjoy the photographs, and maybe see a little of what I see when I’m behind the camera.

Anole and Behold! 🦎

Sometimes the smallest things make you stop and look twice. This little Carolina anole was tucked perfectly among the leaves, keeping one eye on the world and doing his best not to be noticed.

Green anoles are native to the Southeast, excellent climbers, and can shift from green to brown depending on temperature, stress and other conditions.

Another small moment from the outdoors — easy to miss, but worth noticing.

This video was captured exactly a year ago, in September 2025, at daybreak on the Albemarle Sound at Mackeys. It was one of those experiences you simply never forget.

A little Bearolina peek-a-boo from the corn. 👀

This young black bear found a pretty sweet setup — plenty of cover and plenty to snack on. He almost had the hiding part down, but that curious little nose gave him away.

Apparently, stealth mode doesn’t account for a nose that cute. 🐻🖤
