Short caption: this is performing at on Fri Dec 27, 2019. The motion blur is deliberate and in camera, no photoshop. Reeeaalllly long caption about the how and why behind the shot follows if you care to know 👍🙂.
I decided to play with motion blur at this show for a couple of reasons: 1.
Vinnie always plays acoustic electric -that’s his rig behind him. If you think for a minute that acoustic means “soft music” in this case, you’d be hugely mistaken. Hugely. While I wouldn’t say his playing is... 🤔abusive?? I can say I’ve never seen anyone shred on an acoustic like this. Ever😳. I really wanted to convey the frenetic energy of the band as a classic trio of guitar/bass/drums. They play hard and they play loud 🤘🤘🤘.
2. I’ve shot several times, but for numerous reasons I don’t have many shots of the whole band I like. 3. The lighting at this venue was fluorescent 🤢, which is about the worst possible light one can shoot a show in 🙄😠. There’s literally absolutely no way of knowing what you’ll actually capture in Puke Lighting 🤮™️ because fluorescent lights flicker off and on far too rapidly for human vision to perceive. —> However, a camera shutter will always pick this up - **unless you’re using a really low shutter speed** (in photo speak 🤓, this frame was 1/2 second @ f16, 3200 ISO).....
So experimenting with motion blur was not only a cool technique to use, it eliminated a lot of the problems fluorescent lights create. Apologies for the techie nature of some explanations, but there’s a method to my madness, y’all!! 👌
