I entered a photo contest for the first time this year. The image that won - the first one, the one that opened this whole thing, is of my two girls. š„¹š¤
Long before I ever photographed anyone else,
it was Audrey then O came. Small hands I learned to follow with a lens. Days and nights, I didnāt know yet how to hold onto, so I photographed them instead. Light I didnāt understand until I kept chasing it across their faces, over and over, on ordinary beach days just like this one.
I didnāt know then that I was building anything.
I just knew I didnāt want to forget how they looked, right at that age, right in that light.
But somewhere in all that watching, all that waiting for the real moment instead of the posed one, I became a photographer. They made me one, without either of us knowing it.
So when this photo of them was chosen, out of everything I could have entered, it didnāt feel like a strangerās approval. It felt like the beginning, reaching forward to meet the person Iāve become because of it.
First contest. First award. And somehow, still them, the same two girls who started it all, sandy-faced and laughing, having no idea what they gave me that day.
I donāt know how to thank these past five-year. So Iāll just keep photographing. Thatās our love language. š¤
