ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“My main goal as an artist is to provide timeless heirlooms which can be enjoyed for generations, capturing life and energy in every piece I create”.
“What we cannot comprehend by analysis, we become aware of in awe.”
In the midst of chaos, how do we see beauty? Surrounded by turbulence, how do we discover simplicity? Given the power of analytic understanding - driven as it is to claim life as knowable - how do we re-recognize the unknown and unknowable? How do we surrender to the humanity and stand in awe of life’s mysteries? Where do we stand when we stand in awe? Allowing a painting to be born is to stand in awe of one of life’s most beautiful mysteries. Invited by the blank canvas, the best of my intentions and experience enter into a collaboration with uncontrollable coincidence. Neither the process nor the resulting art are ever completely defined. Which way will the colors run? What surprises will the paint reveal as it, ever so gently, touches the canvas? I purposely use oil based media. There’s never any illusion that I control the process. For me, being an artist is about giving birth to the possibilities inherent in mystery. Creation - whether on a canvas, words, visual images, or life itself - is, in fact, about relearning to connect with our higher consciousness. I have had the privilege of having many mentors: some known personally to me, many of whom I have studied with. They include visual artists Charles Walker, Scott Waddell, Michael James Smith, and Chuck Black. As a traditionalist artist my current interest lies mainly in landscape, portraiture, and wildlife painting and my approach is not so much the representation of actual locations as the interpretation of my personal observations and experiences. Regional landscapes provide a fascinating challenge and opportunity to explore their endless combinations of colors and moods. Inspiration and ideas for my compositions come from the interpretation of personal photos, drawings, places I have visited, and my imagination.
