Shining Stars Photo

Shining Stars Photo Custom sessions for dancers, developed through a planned, collaborative process. Full-time photographer for over 30 years. Certified Professional Photographer.

Boutique dance studio picture day delivered with a structured, consistent system. Most dance photos look impressive—when they do—because the dancer did something beautiful, not because the photographer contributed anything meaningful. I know that because I started the same way, back in 1988, when I was still learning what it meant to create something with purpose. Since then, I’ve spent over 35 ye

ars as a full-time photographer, and I’ve never stopped learning. Alongside experience, I’ve invested in formal education: classroom instruction, seminars, conferences, and in-person training with top professionals across the country. I’ve spent many thousands of dollars in the past decade alone to sharpen my craft. For a serious artist, education isn’t optional, and it’s never finished. What I do now is fundamentally different from what most photographers offer. I shoot manual. I shape light. I make deliberate decisions—lenses, exposure, modifiers—based on what will make that specific dancer look strong, skilled, and unforgettable. The dancer brings their technique and artistry. I bring more than 74,000 hours of experience and the training to make those qualities visible in a way that is undeniable. My goal is not to document a dancer's costume and movement, but to create images that stop people in their tracks—images dancers want to print, frame, and keep for life. This is about my art and theirs, built on study, experience, and purpose—not guesswork.🤝🩰✨

Picture Day is coming and I’m almost loaded.

Most of this equipment was originally designed for permanent studio use, not constant transport. But creating strong dance images inside a dance school means bringing a real studio environment to the dancers instead of asking dancers to settle for school-picture lighting.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon! 🩰📸

A proper dance surface matters on picture day.

I bring Harlequin flooring to every studio.

Share this with a dance teacher or studio owner who would be interested in seeing it!

I am a dance photographer.

That sounds simple, but it’s not common. When I updated my profile with the Professional Photographers of America, there were dozens of photographic categories to choose from, but not one for dance photographer.

Most photographers divide their focus and growth between seniors, family portraits, baby pictures, weddings, and whatever comes next. I don’t.

I control how the dancer is seen. That’s why the images read the way they should.

If you’re responsible for how your dancers and your studio are seen, that difference matters.

The line moves fast on some days.
We keep up with the schedule.

Across all of these snapshots, one thing is consistent:

Not waiting for something good to happen.
Making it happen.

If something is off, it gets corrected.
Right there in the moment.

The day keeps moving.
The details still get handled.

Dancers want to look good.
These are the images families and dancers share. People see these as the dance studio’s standard.

What does the photographer actually contribute to a dance photo?

Sometimes, nothing.
The dancer created it. The camera just recorded it.

Other times, there’s more happening behind the image.

Worth noticing.

💃Happy International Dance Day!

LOYALTY DOESN’T IMPROVE THE IMAGES

Many studios stay with the same photographer for decades.

Not because the work is strong,
but because the relationship is long-standing and change feels risky.

That’s understandable.

It’s also where things can start to slip.

The images should be doing work for your studio.

Costumes are great.
Smiles are real.
Those alone will sell pictures.

But they don’t guarantee the dancer looks good.

When the dance photography falls short,
those details can hide it.

People still notice.

Parents share them.
Dancers share them.
Thousands of people see them.
Your studio’s name goes with every image, whether you post it or not.

Those images become what the community believes is your standard.

Loyalty is a good instinct.
But it’s not a requirement when the results aren’t there.

Picture day isn’t about the photographer.
It’s about whether the work actually makes the dancers look good.

If it doesn’t,
is that the marketing your studio needs to fill classes and grow?
