It’s a cycle for me. I started this business so I could earn money to send them to daycare so that I’ll be mentally in a better place when they come home.

And then I realized photography is so much more than a job for me and I love the people I meet and work with as much as the art I get to create with them.

But then I feel sad that I’m not able to give 100% to my family so I think about what I can do to make my business more successful so I can spend more time with them.

As I got deeper into the business side, some things started to go awry.

šŸ‘šŸ¼ I made six figures my second year
🚫 I made myself a six figure debt I didn’t have before

šŸ‘šŸ¼ I promised to work during school hours
🚫 Anxiety prevented me from being fully present

šŸ‘šŸ¼ I created a beautiful studio that brings me peace
🚫 My home became a guilt-inducing avalanche of things I didn’t get done

šŸ‘šŸ¼ Two out of three kids say they want to be a photographer when they grow up
🚫 The shrill sound of ā€œI’m working!!ā€ when I sneak in work around the house and the kids want to play

šŸ‘šŸ¼ I’m convinced we are all beautiful just as we are
🚫 My health hit its lowest lows because I couldn’t fit in self care

I’m not okay with continuing down this path without some serious self-reflection and change. I want to have a business. I want to be a present mom and caring partner. I want to be healthy enough to do everything I’m meant to do, for as long as I can.

So for the next six months, I’m going to focus on just one habit a month. Adding one at a time until it becomes a lifestyle.

If you have similar goals I hope you follow along, let’s encourage each other on in navigating the work-life balance as a solopreneur! You are far from alone. šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Patiently waiting for all the entrepreneurs and business owners leaning into their personal branding era to find me.

Spoiler: there’s no pose that makes a branding image go viral. And even if there were, you should run-not-walk away from them.

Why?

YOU are unique.
YOU serve a specific subset of the population aka your ideal client.
YOU do not want attention for being something you’re not, or YOU will be the catfish.

Brutal truth about what makes an image magnetic?

Great lighting, yes.
Not-awkward poses, yes.
Intentional composition and beautiful retouching, yes.

But even with all of the above, the image will still fall flat in what it’s supposed to do, which is show your audience a sneak peek into who YOU are, and in turn, create/increase interest in working with you. Personal branding 101.

So what’s better than a viral anything? Being known. Not ā€œuhhh I’ve heard of her nameā€ but ā€œyeah I feel like know her, I like her vibeā€ known. And you can do that with:

🧲 Killer visuals (follow my account for examples)
🧲 Messaging that sounds like your voice
🧲 Confidence in the service/product you’re selling
🧲 Embracing that it’s okay to fail publicly

If you have the latter three locked in and struggle with how to achieve the first, hi my name is Elle and I’m an editorial photographer with a whole past career in graphic design and marketing, excellent at what I do but figuring out my own personal branding in real time, and I’d love to get to know you.

No matter who walks through the door, you can expect the same thing from me: thoughtful direction and my full attention to creating images you will love.

But when I’m commissioned to photograph someone for a publication feature, the shoot is often my first time meeting the client.

So each guest is a bit of a blind box (can you tell I’m a mom?). Some don’t care to experiment or be directed, and that’s okay! One of my skills is sensing when to lead and when to adapt.

Sara is no stranger to photoshoots, she’s directed them herself. At one point she exclaimed, ā€˜So this is what it’s like to be on the other side!’

I’m grateful for her willingness to experiment and trust my creative process. And what came through was poise, warmth, and an easy confidence. The final portraits speak for themselves.✨

The most insane pivot I’ve seen in real life, both in terms of direction and speed. If you’ve even had a passing thought of ā€œI want to try something else, but it’s too lateā€ you need to hear this.

Less than a month before this shoot, Hayoung was a young mom with a corporate 9-to-5. She was also a published author. ā€œYou need an online presenceā€ said her publisher. So she reached out to ask me about branding session pricing. I gave her the general idea. ā€œOkay, thank you.ā€

It could’ve ended there.

Me being me, I felt like there was something more. ā€œIs this for you or someone else?ā€

And it all came out. Needing to put herself out there, feeling lost with how to start, ā€œterrible at social mediaā€, looking for any advice. So I asked her to meet up.

A month later, she was in my studio, getting professional hair and makeup, excitedly sharing her greater dreams and goals, and absolutely killing her first branding session.

She’s been putting herself out there every day, learning and growing, even joining my five week personal branding container. And it lead her to putting in her two weeks notice, and she’s officially unemployed and doing this full-time!

Part of that dream had always been there. Waiting, pushed to the side, while life went on. But once she took that first brave step, the following steps started lighting up before her.

Hayoung stands out to me because she has the ability to hear something and put it into action. Despite the fears, the anxiety, the voice saying ā€œwho are you to do this?ā€ And I firmly believe it’s because she’s leaning into her calling, what she’s been meant to (and unknowingly preparing all her life to) do.

I hope this encourages you. Your situation today could be 180 degree turn from your situation a month from now. You don’t have to keep doing what you’re doing. If you’re meant to do something else, fight for it, because I know (gosh do I know) it doesn’t come easy.

And when you do, call me up for killer photos that look like the real you. šŸ˜‰

Be real with me, how do you decide which headshots to use?

Most of us pick the one we think looks the most attractive. It feels safe, less likely to be judged critically. (Women using their looks as armor is a convo for another day.)

That instinct feels harmless, but notice how ā€œbeautyā€ isn’t a variable on this grid.

The decision should actually be based on how you need to land: reserved or expressive, formal or casual. A great branding photographer will discuss this with you beforehand and ensure you capture the shots that align with your goals.

Booking a branding shoot doesn’t instantly elevate your business. 🫣

What it SHOULD do is provide you with the raw ingredients to be plugged into a system that’s built to support your business objectives.

My past career in graphic design means I look at the content you create as an artist, a marketing strategist, and an editor. The messaging, positioning, offers, and design come first. The $$$$ branding session can wait till you have that locked in.

Once that’s set, you’ll have greater clarity and confidence in curating visual assets that speak the language of your brand. The tone of your verbiage is amplified when your photos validate and reinforce it.

Sending my clients off with their edited photos and a ā€œbest wishes!ā€ isn’t me. I use this IG account as well as 1:1 convos to show you what your imagery can do, and what has to be in place first.

Follow along if you’re refining (or finding) your visual voice.

The ā€œinternet strangers support me more than my friends doā€ content has blown up this year

The posts comes across as resentful, but I don’t think the reason for it is indifference or apathy

I think nobody explained the basics

My husband likes every post I publish. But I noticed recently that the sound wasn’t even on when he liked it, so I asked ā€œdo you watch the whole reel?ā€ He said ā€œam I supposed to?ā€ Mutual 🤯🤯🤯🤯

He actually wants to help. He just didn’t know how. But now he knows. And you do too

So many people I talk to feel scared to become more visible for their businesses. Working through that fear of being judged, of looking imperfect, of being vulnerable requires real courage. But the stronger their community, the easier it gets.

So I encourage you to commit to doing at least one of these and show up for your friends in action šŸ’ŖšŸ½

And if you’re the one doing the posting, it’s okay to send this to your ride or die friends and fam, they got you!!
