Charting new waters, different harbors whilst exploring the many islands of Greece; I leave in less than two weeks now, my soul stripped to the bone, camera in-hand, moleskine in pocket, moleskins on my sandaled feet.
One studies the Greek diaspora all year long ...and now to see the real thing, as if for the very first time.
The smallest islands are still pure!
I love being on a particular ferry going somewhere, seeing something that looks interesting and then jumping ship in search of the real Greece.
Sometimes, I just love jumping ship into the unknown.

This week-long assignment shoot at San Diego’s Kaiser Electro Optics was a multilayered story-telling experience.
Given that KEO was an ‘optical’ company, I designed and lit shots within shots.
We set up the first ‘still life’ finding a secretary with perfect hands to be fine-tuning the construction of a lens, hence the red fingernails.
The gentleman behind the lens was lit and layered separately to illustrate the concept of quality control. We focused a spotlight through his lens illuminating his face.
This became the cover shot of the KEO brochure for Ganyon + Ellis Advertising, photographed with my venerable Nikon f2 using Kodachrome.

The venerable ‘pop and drag’ technique also allows industrial and corporate photographers to perfectly capture both a hardware and a computer screen on one piece of 4x5 large format film.
This assignment for Hewlett Packard with the great designer Richard Floyd of Floyd Design Associates (rip) was shot on location with no retouching. Rich, on this assignment wanted to “go Hollywood” to hide imperfections in the equipment casing. Rich picked the colors to match his graphic design for the HP brochure. This was shot on location in Mountain View.

This industrial welder shot is actually a portrait of light. We used what we call a “pop and drag” technique, combining a long ambient exposure with an instantaneous burst of strobe light, a blending of sorts, pure magic

Many annual report covers were in truth complex design solutions. In this case, our client West Capital wanted to show their nascent computer prowess in meeting their corporate goals.
For this trick, I layered in a shot of a computer screen and then double exposed a woman’s face on a single sheet of 4x5 large format Ektachrome. This was our studio speciality as less than 3% of the world’s photo studios could accomplish this on assignment. We shot this at our San Diego Photography studio for Robert Mott Design and West Capital.

Commercial industrial shoots often took me through many corridors of the high technology industry in Silicon Valley, like this two day shoot for Micro-Automation, an illustration of their wafer cutting wheels. As shot with Kodachrome 64.
Seamless backgrounds and gelled lights were often used to simplify backgrounds and focus the attention to the workers and the company products.
