After 15+ years of photographing littles, we’ve learned a thing or two about getting those sweet, genuine smiles and capturing their little personalities 🤍📸
Here are our BEST tips for photographing kids:
1️⃣ Let them be kids! Don’t expect them to sit still, smile at the camera, and “behave” the entire session. The magic usually happens when we let them be themselves.
2️⃣ Movement is your best friend. Let them run, twirl, dance, race, jump, or tackle Mom and Dad. Some of our favorite photos happen when no one is standing still!
3️⃣ Turn poses into games. “Who can hug Mom the tightest?” “Run as fast as you can to Dad!” “Everyone tickle your sister!” Games get way better reactions than simply asking for a smile.
4️⃣ Don’t force the smile. A genuine giggle beats a perfect posed smile every single time.
5️⃣ Give them a job. Ask them to hold Mom’s hand, lead the family somewhere, pick a flower, or show off their best dance move. It gives them something fun to focus on besides the camera.
6️⃣ Have a little incentive. 🍭 If parents are okay with it, a lollipop, favorite snack, or fun dessert waiting at the end can work wonders!
7️⃣ Don’t panic when they need a break. A few minutes to reset, cuddle Mom, or explore is always better than trying to push through a meltdown.
8️⃣ Parents, keep smiling! 😂 If your toddler is doing something ridiculous, resist the urge to look down and correct them. We might be capturing the cutest photo of the entire session!
9️⃣ Let go of “perfect.” The messy, silly, snuggly moments are usually the ones you’ll want to remember most anyway.
The goal isn’t perfectly behaved kids. It’s photos that actually feel like your kids!
