In the studio today : a band - Who On Earth - who is here to shoot their new video against the green screen. Each band member is individually video'd.

I will post a link to the videographer's IG in the comments -- he is absurdly good! Check out his work.

One of the unexpected benefits of renting out my studio is that I get to observe how other photographers work. Or, videographers, in this case.

And as soon as they wrap, I am doing the photo session!

I recently worked with Uncured again in my studio for promotional photos for a new song they just dropped. The theme was moody and dark. This is a composite of a photo of each of the band members.

For my photographer friends - I am posting the BTS shot to show the lighting setup. The one difference between the BTS photo and the final image, is that the beauty dish was even higher up from above as shown here.

The lighting had to be moody, with eyes shrouded in darkness. For that I had to get my head around that this isn't a portrait session where you'd typically want to light up the eyes and go for "pretty" light. We needed the opposite of "pretty".

So it was a mental struggle for me at the start of the photo session to purposely push away from typical portrait / headshot lighting.

All lighting with Profoto of course.
The red light in the back is the little Profoto A2 ... just perfect for pushing high up against the ceiling because it is so small. A red gel on it of course.

Profoto - Share the light

New headshots taken in the studio. An aspiring filmmaker, he wanted something a touch more dramatic than the usual headshots.

So instead of a clamshell kind of setup that I usually go for, I changed it up. A gridded 3-ft Profoto octabox to camera right as the main light ... and then to camera left, a large Profoto 5-ft octabox as a variable fill light.

Silly me, so enamored with the results, forgot to do a pullback shot. The description of the lighting will have to suffice this time.

Another sequence from the studio photo session with Uncured

During this photo session we mostly worked with Profoto flashes which I gelled on gridded softboxes for dramatic effect. But for one sequence of photos (of which three images are shown here), I changed it up with some continuous lighting … in this case the Pavotubes by Nanlite /

You can see the lighting setup in the final image … four LED tubes / Pavotubes on light stands on either side of the band members. I set the Pavotubes to “hue loop” so that all four LED tubes would cycle through what would appear to be random colors.

So with little effort I got a variety of photos with different colors. Not every shot would work obviously, but shooting like this did give a variety with little effort.

A new addition to the studio — a small trampoline! Just the thing to add some bounce to studio portraits.

Kimberly Jay ( instagram.com/modelkimjay ) was the first one invited to have maximum fun during a photo session.

camera: Sony A1
lens: Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 ii GM
lighting: all of course

main light: Profoto D2 in a Profoto 5-ft Octa.
The D2 was used at 4 stops below maximum power, in Freeze mode, to ensure a much shorter duration flash pulse than the D1 flashes I regularly use in the studio.

The two background lights were in Profoto 1x4 strip boxes, and were gelled. The two background lights were Profoto B1 flashes, also set to Freeze mode for that shorter flash duration.

The shorter flash duration freezes her movement, unlike what would have happened with the usual flashes where smear from movement might have been visible.

A timelapse video of the mural being painted, announcing and advertising the new Harry Potter store on 5th Ave in Manhattan, NY

The mural took 4 days to paint. The camera was in a waterproof housing, powered via a solar panel.

Lisa in the studio for headshots. With oodles of personality, she was so easy to photograph, and the photo session became an extended one as we chatted it up a storm. We took some photos as well.

Swipe through for more images, as well as for the behind-the-scenes shot that shows the lighting setup. All Profoto studio flashes and light modifiers, of course. Oh, and a Westcott Eyelighter for the clamshell lighting setup.

Catherine in motion with her movements as an Irish dancer.

It was enthralling to watch the sheer athleticism of this young dancer, as she showed some of the sequences in Irish Dancing — explosive jumps and kicks.

This made her appear to levitate against the Manhattan backdrop.

At 20 frames per second on the Sony A9, it’s so much easier capturing the sequences of movements, as well as peak moments.

Available light.
Sony A9
Sony 85mm f/1.4GM
Mostly around 1/4000 shutter speed, and around f/1.8 or f/2

With the incredible “stickiness” of the eye focus of the Sony A9, every single frame of the 1,500+ images we shot, are critically sharp. And that’s an amazing success rate. Technology for the win!

For Amanda and Ben’s wedding day portraits, we just had to go to their old stomping ground — Coney Island. Even on such a rainy day, the place was still colorful and vibrant.

Amanda and Ben, congratulations and best wishes for your future together.

An image from the archives — Anelisa in the studio.

It’s all about the elegant S-shaped curve in Anelisa’s posing.

The lighting is very simple — a Profoto D1 500 Ws studio flash, and the Profoto Magnum reflector.

That harder light source, along with post-processing that accentuates warmer tones, this really does give a sun-drenched look with this studio shot.
