As soon as I learned both Greater AND Lesser Kudus occurred at Ruaha, I longed to see a lesser kudu, but unlike their regal cousins, lessers were rare and secretive. Our guides promised to point one out if they saw it. Sometime around lunchtime this day, this female lesser kudu stalked warily out from brush to brush, showing her two big chevrons of white - one at the throat and one at the breast - and we had our lesser kudu - the only one we saw. Funny thing, I failed to know I had a photo of it until just this last pass through the 2013 archive. Imagine how thrilled I was to find it...

We found a trio of sisters shaded up in a little hollow along the road. They were huge lionesses but they didn't seem to have cubs or a territory. I called them the "Poor Devils", but not to their faces... Ruaha National Park, Tanzania July 2013.

This was our first lion at Ruaha. She was working on a half-eaten giraffe calf carcass. It was hot. She would eat. She would stop and pant. And for the first time, I was aware of how taxing everything in the bush is - hunting, killing, eating, fighting, living. It is all hard. Nothing is easy. Suddenly the romance was gone. July 2013.

So... at this point in the trip, my particular version of shaving cream, Gilette Foamy Aloe in the turquoise can, ran out, and somehow we came into a backup - classic Red Cap Foamy - you know, the one from 1962 Mantle and Maris used to advertise on TV. No, this can wasn't that old... but it did smell voluptiously of gardenia, and I must say I was a little self-conscious of my new perfume as well as thankful for our open-air Gypsy rig as we set out on this morning's safari. Well, our first encounter was a small family of elephants browsing lazily by the road not far from camp, and guess who likes the smell of Classic Red Cap Gilette Foamy? Oh, and he wouldn't let me forget it the whole time we hung out... Ruaha National Park, Tanzania July 2013.

Our first afternoon at Ruaha ended with this lovely sunset looking across the river to the north. July 2013. From our banda that night we would hear lions coughing their challenges in those breaks, and we could not walk the distance from the banda to the lodge without es**rt because the grounds were situated smack amidst a hippo night trail from river to browse.

It didn't take long for us to encounter our first new species at Ruaha National Park. A Greater Kudu cow crossed the road only feet in front of our open top rig, and received the paparazzi treatment. Greater Kudus are royalty, and they maintain dignity and composure through normal encounters. As she glided in front of our rig, the only sounds were our shutters clicking. We were literally smacked with awe, and she expected it. July 2013.
