The fog was rising as we reached the crater floor, and there were many eland scattered across the plain. One might call it a "herd", except it was thinly distributed with a few here, a few over there, all moving and actively grazing just about any direction one looked. I looked for opportunities to intercept a subject close to the road, but nothing happened early. They were relaxed, but kept their distance. Ngorongoro Crater, March 2016.

The morning descent into Ngorongoro Crater is often shrouded in indescribable mystery. The road winds down, down through an old growth forest of massive acacia trees with a thick blanket of fog settled in around the canopy, so vision is close and the humidity is dripping wet. One cannot help but sense a transition from the present to something deep in the past -- an alternate time that exists separate and apart on Earth in the bottom of the crater. So one is not at all surprised when the first bird they see might be an African Marsh Harrier such as this with an exotic topknot like nothing they have ever seen before... March 2016.

"I've got a switch!" We observed African elephants using broken branches as tools a couple of times this trip. This time I believe the switch was being used to swat flies. This elephant had also dusted itself with the tawny red dust of the area, giving it a very warm color cast that has been difficult for me to capture and present accurately over the years. The temptation is to punch the color more intensely than it probably was in life. On this newest version, I have tried to strike a realistic medium. Photo ops with Little Bee-eaters were precious, and all of mine were plagued with cinchy contrasty backgrounds that made presentation very difficult. I fought with this one for years before finally bringing this version into something I could feel good enough about sharing. It required a very meticulous masking effort to separate the bird and branch from the background, massive reduction in the luminosity and contrast of the background, and detailed clean-up work around the bird and branch where the mask was not tight.
