The steenbok is a small antelope that lives a secretive life in the high brush on the Ndutu. It depends on its small size and solitary nature to disappear into cover and benefits from the fact that it is neither a gazelle nor an impala, herd species that attract more attention from the predators. One of my favorite African animals from my childhood was the closely related klipspringer, which lives on the rocky kopjes that dot the African sveldt and also relies on its secretive nature to avoid detection. We never saw a klipspringer on either safari, so the steenbok would have to do for me - and it took a rare turn for the camera for which I am most grateful. March 2016.

This massive lioness may not have been beautiful, but my bet is she was one tough honda as she seemed to be leading the pride that owned the territory around the marsh near our camp, prime hunting ground to be sure. When this photo was taken she had an older lioness with her (who may have been her mother) and a litter of three half-grown cubs that were exploring the rushes in the marsh pond without much supervision. A day or two later we may have seen that the whole pride was bigger than just these. Ndutu Marsh, March 2016.

When Joseph wheeled the rig around to go after the bat-eared foxes we were distracted by this duetting pair of Darnaud's Barbets singing their hearts out on this dead thorn bush. Joseph implored us to continue to the foxes, and he would come back to the barbets. It was the right move. When we did return to the barbets, they treated us with the most divine coordinated trillings and traded phrasings imagineable. They had their parts down cold. It was mesmerizing.
