Don’t get me wrong. Will and I had an amazing wedding (thanks Mom and Dad!), but after 15 years in the wedding industry, I’d do a lot of things differently if I had to do it all over again.

I don’t regret having a budget friendly wedding. We stretched our dollar by shopping around and making really intentional choices. That’s a choice I’d stand by again and again.

But here are a few things we would do differently if we were planning a wedding today.

After photographing and filming more than 525 weddings across Eastern North Carolina, Raleigh, and the rest of the Triangle, we’ve seen more wedding venues than we can count.

A beautiful venue isn’t just about pretty photos.

The venues that consistently create the best wedding day experience usually have:
✓ Separate getting ready spaces for both partners
✓ Beautiful natural light
✓ An indoor ceremony option that feels intentional (not just a backup plan)
✓ Outdoor spaces that photograph beautifully
✓ Staff who genuinely care about couples and vendors
✓ Guest counts that feel comfortable for the space

So we put together a list of 19 wedding venues across Eastern North Carolina and the Triangle that truly made the cut when it comes to our favorites.

Some of these venues we visit several times every year. Others we’ve only photographed once or twice, but they impressed us enough to earn a spot. Choosing only 19 was truly a challenging task. So if you don’t see your venue listed, don’t fret. Ask us again in a year and this list is sure to look different!

I love May. Like really, really love May. But boy did we have some weather challenges this year. I have never seen wind on a wedding day like we did last Saturday. The sound wasn’t just white capping. There were waves.

And the memory of that wind is going to stick with me for awhile. But Lindsey’s infectious smile. And the way Scott looked at her with so much love. Those are the things that will stick with me even longer.

Also, a shameless plug to encourage future couples to consider a first look. The whole day was windy, but it truly was like a switch flipped right before the ceremony. We are so grateful that Lindsey and Scott saw each other and had most of their portraits done prior to the gale-force winds. A first look truly gives us a larger window of the day for Mother Nature to cooperate and for us to squeeze in photos. I usually harp on rain chances when I think about how a first look can help a wedding day go smoothly. But now I’ll add wind to my list as well.

Trust us on this one.

Today marks a month since Alyssa and Simon said “I do” And ya’ll, the weather was crummy. It felt much more like a gloomy March day than the beginning of May. But ya’ll, the warmth and excitement these two shared. The love we felt. The emotion we witnessed. Well, those are the things that mattered. And that’s what we’ll remember about their big day many years from now.

So yeah, go ahead and get yourself clients like Alyssa and Simon.

May. Is. My. Favorite. There I said it. It’s early enough in wedding season I don’t feel overwhelmed with my to-do list. The weather makes me happy. The colors bring my joy. The nights are long. Everything just feels right.

Here’s the thing though. I would have enjoyed and ’s wedding day even if it had been on the gloomiest January day. They are just the type of people that bring joy and sunshine into everything they do.
