Michele Falls, a Black Brazilian photographer and Cumberland County resident, explores the experiences of 13 Black American women from Cumberland County in a documentary which premiered during Spring/Summer 2022. These women come from a variety of backgrounds – educators, activists, Veterans, poets, birth workers, and spiritual guides, who contribute to the evolving Black American experience in Cumberland County. Michele explores how Black American women adapt and thrive through cultural, professional, and personal challenges. Meet Neal Thomas, 2023 Heritage Award recipient

When he was about 20 years old, Thomas and his brothers learned the craft of split white-oak basket making from an older man in Johnston County who made and sold baskets. Basketmaking traditions in North Carolina have Native American, European, and African origins, each culture influencing the others, but the sturdy, utilitarian, split-oak baskets that Thomas learned to make have been undervalued because they are the “workhorse” of baskets, used to hold everything from livestock to home goods.
