I think a lot of my inspiration comes from wanting to live in two different times at once. I can walk through the mansions in Newport and stare at the portraits for hours. There is something about them that transports you. The scale. The frames. The fact that these faces have lived on those walls for generations. I love all of that…

I also love contemporary art. I love a room that feels collected. Hunt Slonem does this so beautifully in his own homes… the old portraits and antiques mixed with these wildly, colorful, contemporary paintings. The mix of old and new is probably much closer to how I see portraiture living in today’s world, with other pieces that move a person from within. Drop your thoughts below!

First day of school.

This picture was five years ago. FIVE.

And I don’t know… I think that’s the part that gets me.

Because I am here. I see them every day. I see them getting taller and changing and becoming more and more themselves.

But somehow I still feel like I’m missing it.

It just goes so fast.

You think you’re paying attention and then you look back at a picture like this and realize an entire little version of them has already come and gone.

And now we’re onto another grade. Another first day. Another year.

I’m excited for them. I really am.

But also… could we maybe slow this down a little?

What is the ideal age for heirloom portraits???

I think it depends on the type of Heirloom Portrait you’d like to go for. The white background with them looking off to the side or an heirloom garden portrait as shown above.

I’d break it down like this:
- 18mo -2.5 years: incredibly sweet and baby-like, but less predictable; more movement and shorter attention span
- 3-5 years: This is the absolute sweet spot! Enough cooperation for beautiful posing, but still very innocent and childlike.
- 5-6 years: Still excellent, especially if you want a portrait that feels slightly more formal and reveals more of the child’s emerging personality.
- 7+: certainly still beautiful, but it begins to feel more like a traditional, fine art child portrait than a distinctive little child, heirloom aesthetic.

there’s such a small window and they’re no longer babies, but not yet big kids that is the age worth preserving & making a presence in your home.

She will walk by this portrait 8,000 times before she leaves home.
On the way to school. On ordinary Tuesdays. Through every version of growing up.

That is the power of presence and what I love about commissioned portraiture... It gives our memories a physical presence. Something our children can grow up beside, and one day, carry into homes of their own.

Some portraits aren’t made for this century.
They’re made for the next.

Why am I posting this gorgeous home??? Well, I’ve been up to something… I create portraits because one day, they will matter even more than they do today. Creating in a space/environment/scene that draws attention to a subject, rather than distracts from it, is a huge part of creating a portrait that will last more than my lifetime. Part 4: Dress and Backdrop Painted.

The texture and depth of the dress when painted is beautiful, but the most striking thing is the eye is even more drawn to the subject- the face.
