A three day drive from Arizona to Terre Haute, Indiana for clear weather along the eclipse track was worth it to experience the April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. Below is the full sequence I captured with my Canon 7D camera.

APRIL 2024 SOLAR ECLIPSE
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. In other words, the phase of the Moon must be new. To see dramatic totality, you must be in the darkest part of the Moon's shadow, the umbra. In the 2024 eclipse, the umbra will only be about 115 miles wide and sweep across the Earth at an amazing 1,500 miles per hour.

APRIL 2024 ECLIPSE
My sequence of images during the Annular Solar Eclipse (Ring of Fire) of Oct 14, 2023, as seen in Artesia, NM. Truly amazing to observe the Moon cover almost all of the Sun, and to think this event is due to coincidence. The Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun but 400 times closer than the Sun.

For you photographers out there, the images were shot with a Canon 7D, 100-400 mm Canon lens at 400 mm and 2x focal extender. f/11, ISO 200, and 1/100 sec.

I've never experienced a total solar eclipse, but I found a video on YouTube that shows the drama of the last total solar eclipse.

Wow! Price gouge much? Same hotel $1,099 the night before the eclipse and $125 one week later. The hotels are all sold out in Waco, Texas. The search goes on. Hmm, maybe the car will be comfy.

APRIL 2024 ECLIPSE
You have to be in the 120-mile wide path of totality shown on the map below to see the TOTAL solar eclipse. The closer you are to the center blue line , the longer the eclipse will last. It will last at most about 4 1/2 minutes. Dallas, Indianapolis, and Buffalo are near the center line. In the US, Texas has the best chance and the northeast has the worst chance for clear skies in April. I’m going to Texas.

APRIL 2024 ECLIPSE
Hi, I'm a professional astronomer. A total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024. It's very likely my last chance to see this once in a lifetime event. I'm sharing my preparations for the eclipse here. If you decide to see the eclipse, you may find these posts helpful.
