Wind whistling over the ocean breaks, smiles from friends around a crackling fire, the stars showing themselves through the pine and alder canopy. Simple, sweet sweet things.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about where my place as a photographer is recently. It doesn’t feel right to be just posting pretty landscapes in a time when our collective landscape holds so much pain and turmoil. I do see it as a possibility for others to escape for a split second, and that seems like a worthy cause. ⁣

But I’ve also seen so many post their black squares and their week of amplifying black voices and decide their done, that they’ve had their moment of reflection and moved on. That can’t be the way. I’ve always tried my best to fight for the rights of others and use my platform for good, and I know there is power in having a platform, but also that being in my position is a place of privilege. I always want to use that privilege for good. ⁣

In Ijeoma Pluto’s book, So You Want To Talk About Race, she says “When we are willing to check our privilege, we are not only identifying areas where we are perpetuating oppression in order to stop personally perpetuating that oppression, but we are identifying areas where we have power and access to change the system as a whole”. I think that’s incredibly important, and I intend to keep fighting to change that system. ⁣

I want to make public the steps I am taking so I can be held accountable in the long run to this cause. ⁣
- I will be donating 25% of any money I make associated with Instagram through August (at least). ⁣
- I will be aggressively taking on increasing voter turnout both on and off Instagram. ⁣
- I will continue to amplify black voices in the captions of my posts, and share information and knowledge to combat racism. ⁣
- I will continue to educate and expand my knowledge of the issues (so many good books and resources out there!)⁣
I’m always open to conversation and opening dialog, so please reach out if you have something you’d like to share or a way I can be of better help. I look forward to sharing new work while being a constructive member of this little community. ⁣

This is the most consequential year in my lifetime. And while I honestly feel exhausted, I promise to take the next step forward. This one and the next - we will march forward and overcome, deal with injustices and make the best of the situations. Because that’s who we are. All of us, we never fail to overcome. ⁣

I have everlasting faith that we overcome. That we step up to do better. That we fight racism, and take a stance for actively anti-racist ideals. I have always been idealistic, and that means fighting for the best possible outcome even if that’s not where we’re at as a nation. So be it I’ll take a step in the right direction. And that’s where I believe we’re at. Asking the tough questions and moving towards the better. ⁣

If I can ask you one thing it would be to educate yourself on where we’re at and make personal moves to empathize with your black brothers and sisters across America and see their longtime struggle. Their disadvantages. Because I have seen them and they are an enormous injustice, and we need to do better. ⁣

So far we have made progress, but that’s not enough. Police brutality and racism needs to be rooted out at the source, and that involves police unions and the police departments that cover this country. We need to re-assess, re-prioritize, and re-structure. We need change. This will take time, but we should also not settle for promises. Let’s elect people that will make these changes because they’re part of the community they serve. Let’s push for laws and policies that enable a more equal life under the law. Let’s push for policies that give reparations to people who have been disenfranchised for hundreds of years, especially if it’s at my expense. I have benefited for too long. ⁣

Let’s do this now. I want to see a 2021 that’s more just, more offering, more able to support. I want to see America in a better light, a country that will adjust to the demands of its people and give a next step towards the better for all of us. This is what a world leader looks like, and this is what our black brothers and sisters are entitled to. Continue the fight.

Today our president claimed he’s a “law and order president”. A “wartime president”. Who has he waged war on? Citizens of the Untied States, for protesting institutional racism and police brutality. Vote. Vote for prosecutors, district attorneys, mayors, representatives, senators, governors, and a new president.

These latest acts of racism have broken me - it’s one of the absolute ugliest things humankind is capable of. But it’s not that racism has gotten worse, it’s that it’s captured more often than it was in the past. This is an enduring and systematic issue, and we need to do better. These are people’s lives. Step up. Protect and love your neighbors. Do the right thing. ⁣

Please keep reading, because posting a photo is not the end of your obligation for the colored people in your community. There is something more you can do, even if you aren’t able to donate to a minority lead rights group, you need to be engaged. You need to call your senators and representatives and push for policing reform and criminal justice reform. You need to vote in local elections for District attorney’s that will move things in the right direction. You can call your state legislature and ask for legislation that creates racism task forces.⁣

Please do something. Run a bunch of miles for Ahmaud Arbery, but donate to as well. You want to acknowledge your privilege? That’s a good step, but please volunteer on a local campaign offering real change for colored people in your community. Most importantly, VOTE. In every election. Go to vote.org to see if your registered. The only way we can actually get meaningful, lasting change, is if we institutionalize equality. That’s done through representation. You can also call ’s hotline, which makes it easy to call for justice from local officials for George Floyd’s death. ⁣

Is a few minutes of your time worth someone else’s life? ⁣

In case you wanted a little taste of summertime. ⁣

This set is from a project back in November of last year. This project was stressful - a ton of logistics, a ton of prep, and everything went wrong that possibly could have. But when I showed up to shoot that day, all the stress dropped away. I love shooting more than anything, and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to work on projects like this with friends. It ended up being one hell of an evening with and . Hopefully we can hang again soon @ Oregon Coast

These are my favorite days. These days you’ll pass by creeks but the air is so heavy with moisture you feel like you’ve been walking in one. It hangs thick in the trees and plays in the light. You can see the tiny droplets dance in front of your face as you walk. I honestly love being soaked to the core and still hiking, knowing you’ll eat good at camp and fall into the best nights sleep, weary from the day. These are my favorite days. @ Washington
