Michigan's Move Over law has been around since 1949, but a lot of drivers still don't know it or don't follow it. Move Over Michigan brings together AAA, law enforcement, fire, EMS, and towing crews with one simple message: when you see flashing lights on the shoulder, slow down and move over.
The law applies anytime you approach a stopped vehicle with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights. That includes police, fire, EMS, tow trucks, utility crews, and road maintenance vehicles. If you can safely change lanes, do it. If you can't, slow down to at least 10 mph below the speed limit and pass with caution.
Michigan State Police have lost 7 troopers on the roadside, and 13 patrol vehicles have been hit just this year. Tow truck drivers, road crews, and first responders face that same risk every shift.
Slow down. Move over. Every time.
