When was the last time you looked at a photograph of yourself and immediately started analyzing it?

Not because it was a bad photograph.

But because we often see ourselves through a much harsher lens than the rest of the world.

We notice the wrinkles.

The weight.

Our hair.

The tired eyes.

The things we’d like to change.

I challenge all of us to notice something different.

Our confidence.

Our kindness.

Our resilience.

The light in us.

After spending more than twenty years behind the camera, I’ve learned something.

Most women don’t need someone to make them beautiful.

They need someone to help them see the beauty that’s already there

When was the last time you said yes to yourself?

As adult women, making new connections isn’t always easy.

Life gets busy. We have careers, families, caregiving responsibilities, and countless obligations competing for our time and attention. Somewhere along the way, many of us reprioritize our lives, placing ourselves lower and lower on the list. I know because I’ve done the very same thing.

I’ve been working on the idea for the 40 Over 40 Women’s Portrait Experience for more than five years. What kept me from launching it sooner was knowing that I wanted it to be about much more than creating beautiful portraits.

From the very beginning, my intention was to create an experience that would encourage women to begin reprioritizing themselves.

Together, we’ll create portraits that reflect who you are and how you want to be seen at this stage of your life. Along the way, I’m intentionally creating opportunities for the women who participate to get to know one another through optional walks, coffee meetups, lunches, and other gatherings. Then, at the end of the year, we’ll come together to celebrate not only the portraits we’ve created, but the wonderful women who chose to be part of the experience.

Every woman who chooses to participate is making a powerful statement:

“I’m willing to be seen, and I matter.”

For many women, saying yes to this experience means stepping outside of a familiar comfort zone. But that’s often where the greatest rewards are found.

This project was intentionally designed to be about more than portraits.

It’s about creating opportunities for connection, encouragement, and celebration. It’s about reminding women that they are still allowed to take up space in their own lives.

If meaningful friendships grow from that, what a beautiful bonus.

Five years ago, I set out to create something bigger than a portrait session.

I wanted to create a community where women feel seen, celebrated, and connected.

Maybe this is the year you decide to say yes to yourself.

I woke up to complete silence.

No one said a word.

About thirty fellow travelers, most of whom I’d yet to get to know, slowly made their way to the beach to meditate.

Still… not a word.

Afterwards we walked back to the dining room and shared coffee together. The only sounds were the trees blowing in the breeze and the birds singing overhead.

Later we had yoga together. Still not a single word. At first, I was a little uncomfortable. Then… unexpectedly it felt beautiful.

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing for one of Alex’s yoga retreats in Costa Rica. Since I had never been on a retreat before, so I had no idea what to expect.

One morning, Alex invited all of us to spend the first two hours of the day in complete silence. Without all the usual noise, we slowed down long enough to hear ourselves from the inside. I noticed people became more present. Little by little, they let down their guard. It was fascinating to see and feel that transformation unfold.

One of the ladies I photographed that week, Megan, left me a review. Here is some of what she wrote:

“What stood out most was how focused Juliet was on helping me look the way I felt: confident, natural, and genuinely myself.”

Those words mean more to me than she could ever realize. She put into words something that’s been at the heart of my photography for more than twenty years.

When someone steps in front of my camera, my goal isn’t to create someone they aren’t. I want every client to look at their portraits and think, “Yes… that’s exactly how I like to see myself.”

Experiences like this remind me why I created my 40 Over 40 Portrait Experience.

It’s an experience where women feel comfortable enough to let down their guard, breathe a little deeper, celebrate who they truly are today, and appreciate and be proud of themselves.

If you’ve ever considered attending one of Alex’s Flowing with Alex yoga retreats, I highly recommend the experience. I’m already looking forward to the next one.

If you live with other people, could you imagine spending the first two hours of your day in silence?

How would that feel?

I would like you to consider this your personal invitation.

Right now, a remarkable group of women are coming together to be part of something truly special.

They’re being photographed.

They’re stepping outside their comfort zones.

They’re making new friends.

They’re celebrating who they are right now, not who they were twenty years ago and not who they hope to be someday.

And they’re creating beautiful portraits and one-of-a-kind artwork that will become part of our final celebration next summer.

The 40 Over 40 Portrait Experience is more than a photo session.

It’s an opportunity to be seen.

To be celebrated.

To connect.

To have fun.

And to create something meaningful for yourself.

We’re already underway, and I’d love to welcome a few more women into the project before the doors close.

If you’ve been watching from the sidelines and wondering whether this might be for you, consider this your sign.

Your invitation is waiting.

Top secret things are happening behind the scenes of the 40 Over 40 Portrait Experience. 😉

Each woman who participates is creating more than a portrait.

She’s creating a unique expression of who she is, a work of art that’s completely her own.

For now, I’m just going to share a tiny glimpse…

There are stories being told.

Friendships being formed.

Confidence being rediscovered.

And I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’re creating together.

Psst…

Want to do something fun?

The other day, I met a woman who told me she hated most of the pictures she was in.

Not because she hated having her photograph taken.

But because she was always focused on everyone else.

Making sure the kids were ready.

Making sure her husband had the right clothes on.

Making sure everyone was smiling.

Then, at the last minute, she’d jump into the picture herself.

She always felt she looked rushed, frazzled, and anything but polished.

Have you ever felt that way?

Lucky for her, I recently launched my 40 Over 40 Portrait Experience.

She was all in.

This year-long experience includes more than just unique photography opportunities. It also offers a social aspect, allowing participants to connect with and share with the other women in the project, and together they’re already looking forward to our celebration party at the end.

I bet you’re wondering about her portraits…

When she saw them, she couldn’t stop smiling.

For the first time, she felt like the images truly reflected who she is and how she sees herself.

What’s stopping you from updating your headshot?

The other day, I met with a woman who needed a professional headshot. When I asked what she was currently using, she laughed and admitted she had cropped herself out of a vacation photo.

The funny thing is, she’s not alone.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met who are using a photo that’s 10 years old, a quick snapshot from a family gathering, or an image that no longer reflects who they are today.

The problem is that for many people, their headshot is the first introduction to a potential client, employer, referral partner, or customer.

And as the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression.

I completely understand why people put it off. Being photographed can feel uncomfortable, and most people assume they’re not going to like the results.

That’s exactly why I work so hard to make your headshot experience easy, comfortable, and even fun.

Because when we finally sit down together to review the images, the reaction is often the same:

“Wow, I look so good.”

And that’s exactly how it should be.
