Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped building on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. It was mothballed in 1958, and when I photographed it in 2013 there was hope to preserve the structure as part of a school. Two years later, however, it was torn down. While the adjoining buildings weren't particularly noteworthy, the atom smasher itself was certainly a significant landmark in the history of scientific research.

Edit: while the buildings are gone apparently the atom smasher is still there on its side, hopefully to be reused for something (??) when the property is redeveloped.
