On June 13th, I chased UP 4014 from Binghamton to White Haven PA. This would also the the first day of the steam "race" between 4014 and 2102. After catching 4014 departing Binghamton, I headed south to Pittston where I would set up about 5 hours early. I chose to bypass the Tunkhannock Viaduct after seeing the absoulte madhouse that had already started to grow there overnight.
After a little wait, I would catch a small diesel hauled passenger excursion headed up the hill. I am not sure of the ID, but it was the same consist that would later derail in Jim Thorpe. An hour or so later, R&N 2102 would head down grade with its passenger train to meet up with 4014 in Pittston.
Finally the big moment arrived and the sound and sight of smoke in the distance ment the trains were on their way. When the two engines passed, it would be a mad house of people taking photos and videos as the engines thundered up the hill. After the trains passed, it would be a mad dash to the car to get out before the hoards clogged up the roads.
I ended my chase in White Haven where both 4014 and then 2102 would pass by on the way to Nesquehoning, PA
