Windsor, Colorado is famous for its seasonal population of American White Pelicans. These massive birds migrate to the area every spring to feed and nest. They stay on local waterways through the summer and migrate south to the Gulf Coast by late October.
You can find these birds at a few key spots including in and around Windsor Lake in the center of town; Water Valley features several man-made lakes, including Pelican Lake and Habitat Lake; Fossil Creek Reservoir, located just south of town is a popular resting and bathing spot for the local pelican flocks.
Fun Facts: They are one of the largest birds in North America. They boast a wingspan of up to nine feet and unlike brown pelicans, white pelicans do not dive into the water to catch fish. They swim in groups and herd fish into the shallow areas to scoop them up.
