On the way from Milan to Turin we drove through rice fields near Vercelli, Italy. Rice fields are commonly called paddy fields. This term refers to the flooded plots of land used to grow rice. The word "paddy" is derived from the Malay word "padi," which means "rice". You can see the canals used to flood the fields. The clay in the soil helps to keep the water from being absorbed and drying out.
