I mark the passing of each year with a photo. Now since I always take photos it may seem like nothing special but it’s a silent reflection of another year around the sun. The passing of time and more lessons I’ve learned. This year has been no exception. I was able to close out my 40’s with accomplishments I never dreamed myself capable of and with that came a promise to cherish the life I have been given and the lives of those around me.
This year I chose to spend the first hours of my fiftieth year with the man I love in a city I lose myself in each time I go. I got to see art I have only dreamed of and stare out over this beautiful piazza from my window. I awoke before dawn to dress and curl my hair, to beat the crowds and lay myself at the feet of one of Bernini’s greatest works. I could not have asked for a more beautiful scene as early morning joggers and half the carabinieri passed by. Giving myself to the art of creating in a city full of masterpieces was every bit as thrilling and humbling as I imagined it to be.
Thank you to everyone who wished me well on my day and everyone who continues along with my journey. May the next fifty years bring dreams I’ve yet to behold.

I never thought I’d have a favorite painting but I have always been so moved by Saint Jerome Writing by Caravaggio. So moved, in fact, that I flew to Rome so I could experience it in person. I welled with tears seeing such an incredible piece of art. Dark, deathly, almost disturbing. For all the times I have been told my art is too dark, macabre or too weird I think of this work by one of the masters of his craft. And I smile and politely disagree. I am drawn to darkness in life, the beauty it holds and am proud that I can see it that way. That I am so moved by something created over 400 years ago, something so cherished it survived all that time. Until we meet again, Saint Jerome.

A little over a week ago I got the text I knew someday would come but one that broke my heart nonetheless. It’s a strange feeling, grieving someone who has yet to pass but that’s what we did. A collective bargaining of calls, messages and tears as we said our final goodbyes. I won’t claim you and I remained close over the years but you were always a dear friend who I could count on to make me laugh, share a poignant word and keep me grounded.
You passed away yesterday and today was the first day we all woke up without you here, not with us on this spinning earth. And while I am forever grateful that you no longer feel pain I am angry that what should have been a simple life held so much hurt for you. Angry that the vibrant smile you held is only here now in our memories.
As if from a dream I saw this image the day I processed you were leaving us. I saw this in my mind and knew I had to create it for you. The Lonely Bench serves as a way to process grief. To say goodbye and tell you I love you one last time. This image will live on as a reminder that while you no longer walk among us, you inspired so many people with your fight and I will never forget your beautiful smile.

As America prepares to celebrate 250 years as a nation I cannot help but reflect on what it’s like to live in a country founded by the desire for peace and freedom. I am incredibly lucky to have grown up in a land where I can read, write, drive and create the art that burns within me. That I can look the way I want and still have a thriving career. That I control my own finances and make the decisions that are best for my own health and happiness. May this beautiful land continue to thrive for the next 250 years and beyond.

I’m a very task oriented person. It was time to move out of my studio so I packed, moved boxes, lights and equipment. Task, task, task. And it was all just something to be done, but this got me. Taking down the last of my images, my name on the wall for the very last time and the realization that my 9 month artist residency is really over. The fact that I got accepted at all still surprises me but I did it and I am proud, confident and ready for the next big thing.
A huge thank you to Pompano Beach Arts® and BaCA Pompano for this incredible opportunity. I can not wait to see what my fellow AiRs do next!

Online Bullying

Anyone who puts themselves out there opens themselves up to opinion, good or bad. But when does opinion become hate, bullying or harassment?
Over a year ago, I began receiving hateful messages, texts, comments and voicemails attacking every aspect of my life and who I am as a human, artist and woman. What you see before you is a sample of what one keyboard warrior has hurled through the internet at me, and the variety of emotions this lengthy online attack has caused. What is not shown is the laughter as I take in the ridiculous words painted on my body. I am full of love and light and anyone who actually knows me sees this.
While I think the actions of this one unstable individual are laughable; bullying, stalking and harassment are serious and happen to people of all ages. Social media platforms make it simple for these negative, hateful individuals to wreak havoc, and it’s up to all of us to support and protect one another, especially young people.
If you’ve been the victim of online hate, this image is for you. Take back control, do not believe those jealous of your beautiful life and if you need to, reach out to someone you trust. You do not have to suffer alone!

18 months ago, I downsized my life and drove 1,500 miles from New Hampshire to Florida. I moved to chase a multitude of artistic opportunities that I couldn't find back home.

Along the way people asked if I was scared. Truthfully? I wasn't. My mindset was simple: if it doesn't work out, I can always come back. But deep down, I knew this was exactly where I was supposed to be.

In those 18 months, I’ve been incredibly grateful to achieve:
23 physical art exhibits
3 solo exhibitions
1 magazine interview
And serving as the first-ever photographer chosen for a 9-month artist residency!

As my residency comes to a close, the inevitable question pops up: "What’s next?"

My answer is, exactly what got me here in the first place: time, strategic planning, and patience. I’m taking a moment to breathe, explore, and map out the next phase of my creative career.

If you’re sitting on a big dream or facing a massive change, remember this: progress takes time, planning, and patience. Every small step, forward or backward, is moving you toward your next great achievement. Don’t be afraid to take the leap. Sometimes the biggest wins require the biggest changes.

What’s a big goal you’re working toward right now?
