“Have faith, have hope, have courage and carry on.” - Maggie Lena Walker

Maggie Lena Walker devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, and fraternal leader, Walker served as an inspiration for pride and progress.

“Let us have a bank that will take the nickels and turn them into dollars.” Walker founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, the first bank in the United States started by an African-American woman. The bank would survive the Great Depression through the leadership of Walker and at one point became the oldest Black run bank in the United States.

Today, Walker’s home in Richmond, Virginia is preserved as Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, a tribute to her enduring legacy of vision, courage, and determination.

Black history and heritage—including achievements, contributions, and historical journeys—are remembered and commemorated in national parks across the country. Join us for our next Night Sky Program, "Stellar Revelations: Unveiling Your Night Sky Connection at Big Cypress National Preserve". Explore how the night sky is not only a beautiful site, but an integral part of a complex ecosystem!

WHEN: Saturday, February 10th, 2024 at 8:00 PM

WHERE: Seagrape Drive, behind the Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center (33000 Tamiami Trail East, Ochopee, FL 34141)

BRING: Bug Spray, water, a chair or blanket to sit on

We recommend arriving by 7:30 PM to park and find a good place to sit. The program will take place in a grassy lawn located off Seagrape Drive. Following the 45-minute ranger-talk, walk a short distance further south for an opportunity to look through some incredible telescopes set up by local astronomy clubs! How stellar is that?

Our outdoor Night Sky Programs are dependent on weather, so keep an eye on our social media and website for any last-minute weather updates. In the event of cloudy weather, the ranger-talk will move inside of the auditorium in the Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center.

Please keep your lovely four-legged friends at home. These programs are free and open to the public, no registration is required.
