The textbook says foxes are skilled hunters.
The reality? Sometimes they end up upside down with their face in the grass and their tail up in the air. This jump was unsuccessful for foxy, but it gave me one of my more memorable fox photos of this trip.
And don't worry, it caught a good snack a little while later.

One of my favorite things about Mammoth is how wildlife and geothermal activity are sharing the same space. These two elk were standing in one of the warm thermal streams, surrounded by drifting steam as the cool morning air met the hot water.
Just two elk watching the world wake up around them.
It's scenes like this that remind me that Yellowstone isn't only about dramatic wildlife encounters. Sometimes the quieter moments are just as memorable.

One more of the same cinnamon black bear I've posted earlier this week.
He was walking toward us and this time we had a really clear view of him. You can see his face so well in this shot, especially his eyes and the detail of his long claws as he steps forward.
It's always a bit surreal being that close and just watching him move through the landscape being a bear.

Follow along as I share what we came across out there.

This red-naped Sapsucker was hard at work in Silvergate, adding a few more holes to a tree already covered in them. Between the sap and the insects it attracts, he'd turned this trunk into his own all-you-can-eat buffet.

It's not always about the wildlife. Sometimes the scenery is just as memorable. These are two scenes from the park's northeast corner. One of the things I love about Yellowstone in the early season is catching those last traces of winter; ice clinging to waterfalls, fresh snow dusting the pines and sometimes even snowflakes still falling from the sky.

This handsome cinnamon bear stopped beside a tree for a long sniff before rubbing against it, (on the other side of the tree, out of our view, on every single tree).
Up close his coat was a patchwork of colors, light tan, rich chocolate brown and all other cinnamon shades woven throughout his shaggy fur. Every step seemed to catch the light a little differently.
It's easy to see why cinnamon bears stand out. No two seem to wear exactly the same shades of brown.

A mother fox and her kit settled onto the top of a rocky outcrop, perfectly still above the field below. The kit clung close, leaning across her back where he knows he's safe.
For a few quiet moments, they just sat there together, watching, resting and taking in the world beneath them. Just the calm presence of a wild family sharing the same view.

This black bear spent most of its time down in the valley by Tower, moving through low ground where we couldn't quite get a clean view of him. For a while it felt like we were just watching shadows and glimpses.
Then he finally gave us the moment we were waiting for.
He stood up against a tree and started rubbing, scratching an itch like only a bear can, completely unaware of the (very small) audience he'd gathered. Even better was his expression, with his eyes rolled away like he really really needed this.
Sometimes you wait a long time for a shot and sometimes the animal makes it worth every second.

This cinnamon black bear came strolling down the hillside near Tower, stopping often enough to give us some photo opportunities. For nearly half an hour, he put on quite a show before a black bear appeared and revealed what had really brought him to the area. What followed was a rare chance to spend about an hour watching natural bear behavior unfold right in front of us. Encounters like this are a reminder that every day in bear country can bring something unexpected, even on the slow days.

Another reminder of why we stay and drive slow on this side of the park; a mule deer mid-leap across the road, vanishing into the trees on the way to Silvergate. Yet another great surprise on our evening drive home!
