Backstory: Always keep your camera handy is what my mantra is - I was heading home from a weekend in Iowa with Miles in the backseat when I saw a column of smoke, as I drove toward it I saw that it was near Hall's Ice Cream so I decided to divert. Logic of course dictated that I stop & park, buy Miles an ice cream cone, sit him on a picnic table and wander into the flames. Of course my eyes are drawn to patterns, shapes, forms, weird little mixtures of all the tiny little details that makes "things" so interesting in this world and the owner of the burning garage was so fascinating to me - just standing there, no other reaction than gazing into the flames. Now that I think about it, Gazing into the Flames is probably a decent title for this.

Technical detail - the 35mm lens I used for this is about 60+ years old but I've had it serviced and restored to almost new condition. It's a very good lens but lacks some of the sophisticated coatings & computer aided design of modern lenses, which makes gives it a perfect combination of technical excellence while still leaving a little bit of room for soulful imperfections.

Lingering god of Times Square. Continuing on a recent series of religious imagery, Inspired a bit by Richard Sandler's fabulous documentary The Gods Of Times Square.

What a blast Times Square in the 80s & 90s must have been - 100% for sure you would have been mugged and a 10% chance of being stabbed - but to be there when there was such a pungent stew of p**n, preachers, suits, and tourists would have been amazing.

I tend to see religious iconography everywhere. Not surprising given my upbringing. At 16 I moved on to agnosticism, followed by atheism, followed by what I call skeptical atheism.
Skeptical atheism? I think science AND religion are poorly equipped to explain the overall weirdness of the universe. The fundamental question to answer is WHY there’s a universe, not HOW and both approaches try to get at the how without coming close to the why. Science is very good at explaining the how (I’m 100% behind the science guys in the science-religion battles btw) but it falls flat on the why. Science is a process to describe and predict but not to determine intent or meaning. We can describe mathematically the structure of the universe down to the Planck length but it still doesn’t say why that quantum foam is there rather than just void.
Religion is the same - “why is there something rather than nothing? Because god loves us” is an empty statement that falls flat and eventually leads to an infinite regress of further “Why?”. It tries to explain meaning but it’s forever trapped in the confines of human concepts like love, caring, compassion, an active creator that daily guides us about our lives. All admirable but useful more as a source of comfort in an existence filled with suffering rather than a true attempt to answer why there’s an actual universe.
It boils down to this - there’s an unbridgeable gap between the start of the universe and what came before. That gap is most likely forever unknowable and “ultimate” meaning as we know it probably doesn’t exist. Get over it.
I typed this at a trampoline park watching my son have a blast running, jumping, and laughing. That’s probably as good a place as any to start looking for meaning.

Grain the size of golf balls! Who doesn't like it? Me, kind of.

I've had a bunch of rolls of Fuji Neopan 1600 that expired around 2007-2008. I'm down to my final two rolls (thank god). This roll was shot @ 800 thinking that I could develop in Diafine and get back some extra speed. That obviously didn't happen as the negatives were extremely thin and required a ton of help that added even a ton of contrast and grain.

I suppose there's a certain look/feel to these that might be liked by some. But I'd prefer to get a good solid negative to start with and then ADD the look that I prefer whether it's grain or contrast. That's just me.

Good news is that there's one roll left and there were a few exposures that I accidentally shot at between 200-400. Those actually looked pretty nice. So the final roll will be shot at 320 and developed in diafine which should develop to around 1600 or higher.
