Birdwatching with Felicia this morning started slow… until a Northern Mockingbird showed up and basically did impressions of half the bird world. Merlin started calling out brown thrashers, Carolina wrens, eastern bluebirds, loggerhead shrikes, northern cardinals, a red‑bellied woodpecker, even an American kestrel.

One bird. One branch. One full concert.
When it left, so did the “crowd.”

Did you know pelicans have one of the most impressive fishing tools in the animal kingdom?

When a pelican dives or scoops along the water’s surface, its lower beak expands like a flexible net. That iconic throat pouch—called a gular pouch—can stretch wide open to form a giant scoop, letting the bird gather a whole mouthful of water and fish in one motion.

Once the catch is inside, the pelican simply drains the water by tipping its head forward, then swallows the fish whole. It’s an elegant bit of engineering that turns every dip into a highly efficient fishing trip.

Nature doesn’t mess around when it comes to clever design.
