Some photographs are obvious. The first look. The kiss. The portraits. The dance floor.

And then there are the smaller pieces of a wedding day that don’t always make the shot list, but somehow become the ones you’re grateful to have later.

The way the room felt. The people gathered around the table. The hand squeeze. The rain that changed the plan but not the mood. The moments happening quietly between everything else.

Those are the photographs I think are worth remembering. Not because they were perfect. Because they were yours.

There was something almost surreal about A&M’s engagement morning. We started early, with wildfire smoke hanging in the air and softening everything around us into this hazy, film-like light. It wasn’t the morning any of us would have planned, but that’s one of my favorite things about photography. You work with what the day gives you. And sometimes what the day gives you is something you never could have recreated on purpose.

We photographed two professional models and a real couple during the same styled shoot, and I kept thinking about the difference..

Professional models are incredible at what they do. They understand their bodies. They know how a small shift changes the photograph. They can take a direction and turn it into movement almost instantly. And as a photographer, I love that because I believe in direction. I believe in knowing how to place someone in good light, where a hand should go, how to create shape, and when a photograph needs a little help becoming what I can already see in my head.

Then I photographed our real couple and something different happened. They already knew how to reach for each other. They knew what would make the other person laugh. Their hands naturally landed where they always do. There were tiny looks and familiar movements that no amount of posing could manufacture. It’s why I don’t think wedding photography has to choose between posed and candid.

There are moments when I’ll guide you completely. I’ll tell you where to stand, what to do with your hands, where the light is best…..

And then there are moments when the best thing I can possibly do is stop talking.

Because sometimes the photograph I was planning is beautiful. And sometimes what happens two seconds later is better.

Knowing the difference is the job.

Being completely present. Laughing. Taking moments together. Choosing a vendor team who protects your experience instead of interrupting it.
And being wildly excited that, at the end of it all, you get to spend your life with your favorite person.
That will always be kinda chic to me. 🫶

One of my favorite things to do during a Wawasee family session? Recreate a 30 year-old family photo. While I love the recreation photo, the outtakes can’t be beat. 🫶

The smallest weddings can hold the biggest feelings.

K&J chose a courthouse elopement. Simple, personal, and centered on the reason they were there in the first place.. to get married.

No ballroom. No long timeline. No pressure to make the day anything other than their own.

Joy doesn’t have a guest count and a wedding isn’t measured by the size of the celebration. It’s measured by the commitment, the people, and the way the day felt.

The people are always the point. 🫶

Lake Wawasee Fourth of July minis are always one of my favorite traditions. 🫶

Kids running barefoot, exploring the shoreline, looking for frogs, and forgetting there’s even a camera around.

Every time I photograph children, I’m thinking about the images I’d want as a mom. Not just perfectly posed smiles, but the moments that tell them who they were at this age. The laugh that disappeared a year later. The curiosity. The way they held your hand.

The greatest compliment is when families keep coming back.

I first met the Foster family while photographing their cousin’s wedding nearly 10 years ago. Since then, I’ve had the joy of photographing them through different seasons of life, and they’ve now made the drive from Toledo for Lake Wawasee minis twice.

That kind of trust never gets old. Thank you, Foster family, for letting me preserve your story year after year. 🫶
