Twenty years ago, I picked up a camera simply because I loved being outdoors. I never imagined that one day it would lead to a published book through TCU Press.

Sometimes, a wildlife photographer has to be ready and, yes, even a little lucky to capture a special moment in the wild. This image of a dolphin was taken in the Laguna Madre adjacent to South Padre Island, Texas. Dolphin pods in this area are known for playing near the bow of fast-moving boats as they head out into the Gulf of America, so I trained my lens there and waited. Moments later, they appeared as if on cue.

I don’t take many photos in the world’s oceans, but that is something I hope to change in the coming years, perhaps even by taking up snorkeling to explore a world that has mostly eluded me so far. I don’t yet own an underwater camera, but I would love to hear recommendations from those who do.

Motionless and mirrored, a least grebe drifts on a hidden pond in Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Area along the U.S.–Mexico border. These birds are best known for their frequent dives and quiet, elusive behavior.
