THE STORY BEHIND

This one comes from another time photographing Ladybug and Waffle in my backyard studio. I was focused on Waffle, then Ladybug slowly stepped into the frame breaking the plane. I instantly knew the dimension was exactly what the frame needed and snapped the shutter.

This is such a prime example of having a plan going into something - whether a photoshoot or any of life’s moments - and the plan changing for the better.

On this Thanksgiving Day, I’m thankful for all the moments that changed for the better… simply because they didn’t go exactly how I had hoped.

FROZEN IN TIME

Another all-time favorite frame. This was captured while photographing an incredibly talented trainer lunge one of the most beautiful palomino stallions I’ve seen.

The horse was so attuned to him - perfectly submitting to his requests while simultaneously showing every ounce of his power. I felt like such a fortunate witness to watch their dance.

BRAID & BUTTER

A few years back, I was photographing Wade and Jeff’s stunning young mare, Luna, in Kentucky. Her trainer had expertly braided her beautiful flaxen mane and I caught her sniffing the ground as if she was boasting about her fancy braid to all the other horses in the stable. I love the color and lines in this one.

SLOWING DOWN

This one is so whimsical. I was photographing a client’s flea-bitten draft cross and we were quickly running out of light. He was bothered by the pesky flies and I was able to catch him mid-head throw in a perfectly imperfect blur. The wildness of his mane in this image instantly made me think of Gandalf’s majestic horse, Shadowfax.

RED MARE SWISH

One warm sunset, I was photographing Waffle and caught her perfectly mid-swish. If you’ve spent any extended time with a red mare… you know the sass. But beyond the tenacious ‘tude, I love how the summer sun nearly lights her red tail on fire to create such a bold image.

THE MAGNOLIA MARE

Every summer our magnolia tree blooms and it always captivates me. Between the large, soft petals and the rich, waxy leaves, it’s one of my favorite trees.

A particularly beautiful boom had fallen from the tree so I decided to pick it up and juxtapose it against my mare, Waffle. She curved into it and created such perfect movement that begged to be snapped.

CHISELED

This is one of my favorites. It was a late summer evening photographing my friend Kelle’s beloved and oh-so-handsome gelding, Henry. Every moment with this sweet friend (which most certainly involves animals) is always peaceful and energizing.

The sun had set, but we were still having fun creating so we played around with light and I was able to capture this frame of Henry’s chiseled chest and dream-worthy mane. It feels like one of those epic statues of a horse riding into battle… and I just love it.

IN BETWEEN

I’m kicking off some early holiday shopping by sharing some of my favorite pieces from my print shop. In the next couple of weeks, I’ll share some stories behind the art.

I shot this in my quaint backyard studio on a hot summer afternoon. It was as simple (and chaotic if you’ve ever spent time with horses) as sprinkling some grain on the floor and letting Ladybug and Waffle do their thing while I waited for the perfect frames.

This one in particular was cool because Waffle was behind Ladybug and I was able to frame her between her mom’s front legs and her fuzzy mane hanging down from her neck - also grazing on the surprise afternoon snack.
