Standing in Honor
72” x 40”
oil on canvas
Artist: Ed Salazar
A full-figure portrait of a Hidatsa chief, rendered in the classical tradition of the Old Masters — dark ground, resolved light, and a quiet dignity that asks the viewer to slow down and look. The regalia — the trailing war bonnet, the hairpipe breastplate, the eagle-feather fan — speaks to a leadership earned rather than given. My aim was to let him emerge from the shadow the way memory does: partial, honored, and unforgettable.
