Just a taste of what has been going on for a couple hours. Still plenty more of this storm left. Just playing with the new iPhone 14pro. 😎

Spring is a great time to be thinking about vivid colors to photograph. But, even if the weather outside is dreary, it doesn't mean that you can't bring Spring in front of your lens right in your very own home. So, if you are already cooking anyway, why not take a moment to celebrate great ingredients with a memorable photo? All you need is some window light some vibrant produce and a camera. It can be your DSLR (left) or your iPhone (right). It is just a perfect and delicious opportunity to practice and enjoy photography. These fresh Roma tomatoes, onions and garlic are about to become fire roasted tomato sauce. I saw the wonderful colors and contrasts on the counter so I turned off my kitchen lights, and just using light from the little kitchen window to grab a couple quick photos.

Awhile ago I posted about taking time to get the shot, in an essay about photographing an antelope. (No antelope were hurt in the capturing of those photos). Well, here is another example of taking the time. In this photo, "City, Meet Country!", I had photographed these lovely models on driveway that leads to an arena in Decatur. Keeping track of the time of day and the direction I was shooting, as well as utilizing info from my metadata in the image file, I then set out at 5AM and drove down to the south side of Dallas from Denton, and found a location from which to shoot a panorama of the cityscape during the same time of day. The clouds were a bit unexpected, but I had enough light break through so that some blending and finessing in Photoshop, I was able to pull the two images together to create this image to show how a little country fashion can easily hold its own in the big city. I can say I have about 20 hours into this shot, start to finish, but it was really worth the work because it was fun watching my idea come to fruition and it was time to work on my Photoshop skills a bit anyway.

If you like country fashion, you should definitely look at these great brands!

I had the pleasure of shooting these exclusive Ride Ready Boots for an ad for NRS. There is a lot of thought put into this line of boots, and they are rugged but still have great looks and style. You can wear them to the office or out to dinner and then head out to the ranch and work your horses on some cattle and they won't miss a step. Good thing these were a size too big for me because I really wanted them to stay with me. Hoping we get an opportunity to shoot some great images of Ride Ready Boots in action. I'll keep you posted.

NRS has teamed up with Rios of Mercedes Boot Company, Anderson Bean Boot Company, and Olathe to design a line of boots that are ready to ride, made to last and withstand countless hours in the saddle. For the rancher, the roper and the cutter, these boots are customized to fit your riding needs. Made in Texas.

Dooney and Bourke, another company that takes their social media presence seriously. They always have professional photos, they show their products in the best light, at great locations and taken by professionals in commercial photography. ( I know because I have worked with them on a few location shoots)

Think of it like this, you know when you see a commercial truck (plumber, electrician, furniture sales co. etc.) on the highway and the driver is being a aggressive and dangerous jerk and showing the company logo on the side of the vehicle in the worst light? You may not remember what happened days of weeks down the road, you just remember not to patronize that business because you don't get a good feeling about that brand name. How you portray yourself on Social Media and in E-Commerce and catalog images sends the same signal. That is how branding works. If you look cheap and unprofessional or like you are run by high schoolers, they will think of your products in that way as well.

Though I have still not managed to have dinner there yet (I did enjoy the bar!) , I still follow them because I love how they love their food, so they always take care to use compelling photography on their social media pages. I wish more of our great restaurants and businesses could see the value in showing their products in the best light. I could eat this right off the page!

Real professional photography matters. Social media images matter. I'm here to help, just a click away. ;)

Just because you only have your phone with you as you are enjoying a cool evening Sunset by the pool, doesn’t mean you can’t practice your photography and have a little fun with the light. If you feel you’re photos are lacking a little something, try not to think so much about composition, think about how the light is playing on your subject. Then, capture the “light” and the rest will fall into place. cameras don’t see subjects, they see light. Don’t forget, half of your image is editing. I use a free app called Snapseed with my phone. You can play as little or as much as you like in your post work. Take your creativity out for a spin around the block.

I'm not a portrait photographer, I'm pretty much commercial.(no weddings, babies or Sr. Grads) though corporate and editorial portraits I do. But, a very special friend needed me to step-up and help her friend's daughter with some graduation photos. Having some significant physical challenges can make a person a little uncomfortable around strangers, but since I already knew this young lady, she felt a bit more comfortable with me as her photographer. I was a little out of my comfort zone though because the challenge of capturing the beauty of a child the way a Mother sees her is incredibly intimidating. But, with good friends with me to help, we had a great day in spite of some really challenging weather conditions. Funny, this photo, shot through a storefront window, was an idea that I had in mind but got frustrated with the results I was seeing on my camera back. I had thinned out my camera bag to make it lighter and left my polarizers at home, so the glare was really strong, but after processing this one, it quickly became my favorite shot of the day. I see a little Princess Diana in this lovely young lady.
