Empire never disappoints.

I photographed their first maternity session, so getting to document this season again felt really special. Watching families grow and being invited back for these milestones is something I'll never take for granted.

Northern Michigan maternity sessions have a way of feeling timeless. If you're dreaming of documenting this season along the Lake Michigan shoreline, I'd love to help you plan something that feels natural and true to your family.

Some wedding days don't go exactly as planned, and those often end up being my favorites.

This day was full of strong winds, a private waterfront ceremony in Rapid City, turquoise (no exaggeration) blue water, and some incredible florals. There were definitely moments where we thought the wind might win..but looking back, it added so much movement and made the whole day feel like it was exactly what it was supposed to be.

One thing I especially loved about this wedding was that every vendor was local to Northern Michigan. Even though I live downstate now, I was born and raised in Traverse City, so I'll always consider myself at least half local (is that a thing? I'm making it a thing.) It was so much fun getting to work alongside such a talented group of vendors and be back in a place that still feels like home.

What stood out to me most, though, was how intentional these two were about including their daughter throughout the day. She wasn't just there for a few family photos...she was part of the celebration from beginning to end, and I loved getting to document every single bit of that.

A windy day, a beautiful waterfront, an amazing vendor team, and a family that was simply excited to celebrate together. Thanks for trusting me to tell your story. šŸ¤

I won't lie...when we planned this session, the goal was to have the Sleeping Bear Dunes in the background. The water. The dunes. That was the vision.

Instead, we showed up to thick fog. I almost cried. haha

But I greeted them and started going in about the fog (internally freaking out), and they just smiled and said they were happy to be there.

No disappointment. No trying to reschedule. No worrying about whether everything looked perfect, or exactly as planned.

But then they continued to surprise me. They didn't even really need guiding. They just went out to the water, and explored together. They weren't worried about getting wet or sandy from the dunes & waves. They were just there, taking in real moments.

I left this session thinking about how easy they made my job. Not because the conditions were perfect, but because they were focused on something bigger than that. They were there to document this season of life as a family of three before everything changed.

And honestly, I don't think it could have been better. Made my heart happy.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that moms are almost always the ones behind the camera.

They're documenting birthdays, vacations, and everyday moments, but they're rarely in the photos themselves.

That's one of the reasons I love sessions like these. It's a chance to press pause for an hour and create something your daughter will actually get to look back on one day..photos of the two of you together.

No milestone. No reason other than wanting to remember this season exactly as it is.

One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is that they don't have to be one thing.

They can be polished and intentional while still leaving room for the moments in between. The ones you couldn't plan if you tried.
This session felt like the perfect balance of both. A little editorial, a little documentary. We spent the evening wandering through the trails and gardens at the Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, watching the skies and wondering if it would rain at all.

After rain on and off for most of the day, it somehow gave us the window we needed. Though if we're being honest...we were secretly hoping for one final downpour at the end for a full-on Notebook moment. ;)

While we didn't get the downpour we were hoping for at the end, we did get incredible soft light, beautiful blooms, and a whole lot of moments that felt like them.

Some nurseries just instantly feel like home.

Lennon Mae’s space was filled with warm neutrals, sweet details, and so much love tucked into every corner. The kind of room that tells a story before baby even arrives home. šŸ¤

These first days go by in such a blur. Tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and all the little details you never want to forget. It was such an honor to document this season for the Purchases, and I can't wait for them to see the full gallery! Here's a little sneak peek. ā¤

There’s something so special about those first few days.

The tiny fingers. The sleepy stretches. The way they fit so perfectly in your arms, even though somehow they’ve already changed everything.

✨ Welcome to the world, Lucas.

I don't think this little guy expected his chickens to steal the spotlight. 🤣

One minute we were taking family photos, and the next he had a full flock determined to be part of the session. I can't really blame them.

It's hard to beat a session that comes with its own surprise guests.
